What did you do to your Gen 1 today?
I am one that likes to have all of the special sockets in my tool bag even if I never use them again, most of my big toys are OTC or names like them, not many Snap On though.
When I was a mechanic I has a cabinet full of one of a kind adapters and fixtures for Detroit's and Cummins.
Have you ever used a torque multiplier to torque bolts?
When I worked on an overhaul or inframe I wore white coveralls and my tools were always clean, never slopped with grease.

.no, i've never used a torque multiplier. refer to the above statement. a big piece of pipe in my dirty blue jeans is just fine with me
Annual fuel filter change.
Which for me sometimes is only about 5k miles on it. Never had any issues, but for me, it's cheap insurance for having issues in the winter, as it's usually in October I put the new one on.
Anyone think this is overkill ? Changing fuel filters at 5k ? Can't see any reason not to, other than to save a few $$

T man, I see you label the mileage and date on the filter as well with your label maker.
Very professional touch.
I run the fuel filters for two years on my summer only 1st gens and I just use a Sharpie for "label making" on the filters.
They usually see 2,000-5,000 miles a piece over the year.
I do keep a spare fuel filter in the 2nd gen trucks, in the winter in case of bad fuel / frozen filter issues.

Without a fuel pressure gauge, the filter change is a best guess PM issue. With a gauge, you can wait till the pressure starts dropping a little. Seems I remember the recommended interval is every other oil change, which seems a bit excessive to me.
On the other hand, I always carry a spare, as you can get a load of bad fuel anywhere. I bought a tank of fuel on the reservation in ND and it loaded the filter in 30 miles. It took 3 filters to burn that one tank of fuel.

My FP was / had been fluctuating between 3-4 PSI all the time.
With the new filter, it's at a steady 4-5 psi. Mostly at 5 psi, but on occasion reverts back to 4.
I guess it's a good thing to have a gauge , eh ?
I always change the fuel filters by fuel pressure. A slightly loaded filter filters out more of the finest particles, so every time you change a filter, you are letting a fresh batch of fines run through the system. My fuel filters normally last for years, 10's of thousands of miles. If you do get bad fuel, it is a different story, naturally.

water is the #1 culprit for the drop in fuel pressure and a "clogged" fuel filter in the stock configuration of our engines. filter fills up with water to the point where it doesn't want to pass fluid at all. kind of interesting how such a simple mechanism can do this job! i like to dump/drain my filter into a clear container on occasion just to see what's going on in there. let it sit and the water will separate.
edit: in addition, adding a small inline filter pre-lift pump, which are about $3 at napa (vs. $13 for the fs1221) would make the fs1221 nearly last forever. as long as you drained the water off occasionally. although, i'm on the once a year plan as well
