shutdown solenoid

i removed a bad shutdown solenoid today on my truck and was wondering if you can grind the tip down too far...it worked barely when i grinded just the chipped end off. when i grinded it down more it shut it off three times and i thought i was in the clear later to find out when i got home of course that the truck wouldnt shut off. it is metal on metal i believe but i am just wondering why it would work three times and then just stop. is there any way it wasnt tapered enough? my friend grinded his down to the same level and his works just fine. all i can think is maybe the tapering is off. any tips would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like Wanna told the story, short and sweet: the turned up fuel blew the rubber of, you sanded it, and it blew off again. Common, and not much more one can say. To get the shutdown solenoid plunger cheapest go to the link, the Volkswagen Bosch part is the same:

in a matter of three hours?i grinded it down to metal i seriously doubt that metal chipped away within three hours let alone rubber. is there a possibility that i didnt taper it enough?or did i just grind it too far?

When it's metal on metal it's not reliable. I would get a replacement and grind it before you install it. Just flatten out the tip so it's not concave any more, then put a big radius on the edges. Mine is still holding.

thank you very much. im sorry i didnt get it the first time maybe im a little dense. so just grind off the part where it looks like it would chip(concaved part) then radius it? is there any way you can screw up on the radius part? which way should i lean?too much or too little on the radiusing?

Yeah, all I did was chuck it in a cordless drill and run it at low speed on a piece of fine sandpaper until the end was perfectly flat. You could overdo the radius, you don't want to wind up with it looking like a bullet. If I had to guess I'd say I put about 1/16" radius on it. I just rounded it over until it looked "right" to me.

I guess I may have sounded a little sarcastic, and probably meant to, but I know Wanna is one of the most helpful guys you'll find here [and elsewhere] and also that he often says much in few words, unlike myself. I have more of a talent at saying little in many words
