Which lift pump..

My lift pump is leaking. At least, its stained all around the block there and appears to be leaking. I just got in from a 600 mile, hi-speed unloaded run and will clean it real good to make sure. Question is ..which lift pump if I do need one...Carter or Master or what. I don't think I need a piston type lift pump...

Go ahead and do the piston-pump; and, while you are at it, get the stuff from Glacier Diesel to eliminate the aggravating hard-lines, both between the filter and I.P., and between the filter and lift-pump.

There are numerous times that those two simple changes have made my life MUCH EASIER.

Well worth the few extra dollars that it costs.

Whichever style pump you go with, install one of those cheapie inline filters AHEAD of the lift-pump.

To see why, read this :

If you aren't going to add any fuel there's no reason not to use a stock type replacement. The Delphi pump I got worked fine for the year I ran it, usdieselparts.com was where I got it from. It was less than $35 shipped, but I'm sure it's more expensive now.

I got a reply (sorry we do not sell kits for early ctd )
HELP !![ maybe somebody out there has more INFO !!

You will have to source the actual piston-pump from a Cummins parts source; an agricultural engine source is much cheaper than a truck source, for the same parts.

The Glacier Diesel "Big Line Kit", for later model trucks, is what we use; the fittings are the same.

Here is what you want :

Vulcan also offers one that may be the better buy, though I have no first-hand knowledge of it.

If you want to eliminate the hard-line from piston-pump to filter, it will take TWO Glacier kits, plus one extra fitting that screws in the top/outlet of the pump.

I think one of the Vulcan kits has most of the fittings to get it all in one kit.

Someone else will have to clarify/verify that.

Hey Wanna,

How much increase in fuel are you talking ( hp gain?) about before you switch to the piston pump?

If you are close to 300 RWHP you need a better fuel supply, be it the piston pump or some other setup.

I'm learning alot of info floating around these threads!
In the entire fuel system, is the mech. FP the only one? I had my 93 jell-up a week ago( still had summer fuel) and replaced the filter. My brother said I may have the "tank pump" going bad. I would only imagine that on the fuel pick up is only a sock, if that. Thanks for this awesome info!!!!!!!!!

Look here to see what is in your fuel-tank :

You should NOT have an in-tank pump.
