Discuss your mechanical fueling experience
I have heard lots of different ideas of fueling and reliability on these 12 valve trucks. I like the idea of having a truck that is 100% MECHANICAL. I’ve seen lots of people adding programmers and advanced fueling systems to their trucks. I want to go the opposite direction.
Please discuss your experience with mechanical fuel pumps if you have them. I was thinking about using something like this……. Glacier Diesel Power | 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins Fuel Boss Base
Thank you

The factory style lift pumps can support 500HP if not more IIRC.
If you where building an all out drag truck that Glacier pump would be a great option. It is overkill for at least the street trucks I build and drive.
I agree that not running an electrical pump on your 12V is a smart choice for reliability.

There was a stretch of time several years back I had about 3 or 4 lift pumps go weak on me in under a year, but the one I have now has been fine for at least 5-6 years now.
the oem stock one lasted about 150k if I remember right
I have not tried any of the other systems out there; my fueling/injection is all stock.

I know you are talking 12 valve so bear with me here. I had an 01 with the electric pump and vp44 injector pump. I had two of the oem electric pumps go south on me. in very short order it took out the vp44. First one was under warranty. Second was not. At that point I put a RASP pump (it is exactly like the Glacier pump except it was out before the Glacier). And it worked great albeit with quite a bit more plumbing, check valves, hobb switch etc. Only issue I ever had with it was the front seal on the pump would go out once in a while, generally the higher the rpms the higher the fuel pressure went. It was no problem to change the seal out 30 minute job start to finish. However when I put an upgraded cam in that truck, the cam came with a fuel pump lobe on it. So at the same time as the cam install I replaced the RASP pump with an oem 12 valve pump. It got rid of all the additional plumbing the RASP required, no seals to go out never had another issue with fuel pumps. The oem 12 valve pumps normally last a very long time and as Oliver mention are capable of 500hp. So I can say I personally would never swap out an oem 12 valve pump for electric or even the Glacier just no need for it. The OEM is more robust than the electrics and much less to go wrong as there is no electricity, brushes etc involved at all. The glacier while it will surely work great it just adds additional plumbing that you don't need and don't have belts, seals to deal with. Now if as Oliver mentioned your building an all out drag truck or puller that might be a different story if the horsepower required it.
I would love to put a piston lift pump on my 01 24 valve. Except there is no provision for one on the block. And paying $1000 for an add on is just not in my field of vision. If I had the money, I'd rather put it in my 1st gen.
