Looking for Advice – Hemi vs. Cummins

Hey Guys, Hopefully within the next month or two I will finally be switching back to a RAM. I have been doing a ton of research on this forum and I am torn on which direction to head. So I was hoping if you could help me out with some suggestions and answer a few questions. I’m unsure if I want to go with a 1500 Crew with the 5.7 Hemi or the 2500 Crew with the 6.7 Cummins. I used to have a 2001, 2500 with the Cummins and loved the truck. Both my wife and I love the new 2500’s and loved my 2001 they look like big HD truck.

I will be using the truck as a daily driver for work which is 64 miles each day and it varies from speeds from 45 – 65mph. I won’t be hauling stuff too often and if I did it wouldn’t be anything very heavy.

I have been doing a lot of research and know that the EGR system on the 6.7L soot’s up the engine really bad and robs MPG. One of the reasons I am getting a new truck is to have a full warranty and I know removing the emission crap voids all warranties. So if you don’t remove it, is it still a reliable truck and what kind of mileage are you seeing around the city and highway?

My main concern is the soot and fuel mileage vs. how I will be using the truck. Would I be better off going with a Hemi instead?

Thanks!!

Sounds like the Hemi would be better choice for you. The diesel pays for itself IF you work it but if you don't, it cost more to maintain than the gasser.

The newer Hemi 1500s are really good on fuel too with that variable displacement they have now. I might end up getting a 1500 gasser if I ever get rid of my 12 valve. Don't think I could afford to pour all that fuel through any of the new 3/4 or 1 tons, gas or diesel.

If you just looking for a truck for a driver and wont be hauling anything, then go for the hemi. The 1500 will ride a bit better than a HD truck too.

Gentlemen, lets not forget to mention re-sale and longevity. I would actually recommend a low mileage Cummins Mega Cab Laramie. It will save you thousands less than a new Hemi.

With that said, if you get a Cummins, YOU WILL NOT LEAVE IT STOCK!!!

If your going 1/2 ton, I would go with a Ford F150.

I might even agree, but, I would only get an F150 with the Ecoboost. It absolutely demolishes every other 1/2 ton truck.

Sounds like you don't need the Cummins, so the only reason to get it is if you just want it, which is ok too. However, the Hemi will do all you need it to do based on your post. My wife's 1500/Hemi 2011, which we bought new last March is one nice truck. Hand calculation yields 18 - 19 MPG at 70 - 75 mph, which by the way the MPG reported by the EVIC is usually within 0.1 or 0.2 MPG of my hand calcs. Wish I could say that about the lie-o-meter on my 06!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Unless you need to tow, get the Hemi. Not only is the mpg comparable, In my area gas is a buck cheaper than diesel. That said, history has proven that you'll get the extra $6k you paid for the diesel back in your pocket at resale.
