Stock air filter
How well does the stock air filter do? I just got through with some maintenance and removed my cool hose to get better access to the oil filter. When I did this I noticed that a slight ring of dust at the bottom of the turbo where the cool hose transitioned to the turbo.
At first I thought that the cool hose was the problem but found that there are no holes or anything in the cool hose. Even was able to do a pressure test.
Next I turned to the seal of the old filter to the air filter lid. Nothing there, there was a great seal and no gaps. There were no telltale wisps of dust or anything. I checked the filter minder connection as well as the connection at the IAT sensor.
The cool hose has a tight fit over the turbo and the air box, plus the clamps were tight.
I'm out of ideas except thinking it came through the stock filter. Am I being too optimistic by not expecting anything in the intake tract? I wouldn't think that the hole in the bottom of the air box and duct would cause a problem (basically a homemade version of the PSM intake).
The old filter had about 6k on it.
I replaced it with one of the new larger Fleetguard units, cleaned everything up and put it back together.
Thanks for any ideas you have.

The inlet for the air box is right above the front wheel, I believe what is getting in is brake dust which is smaller in size then what the filter can catch. Any filter.

I installed one of those new bigger filters in my stock box and it was done and toast in 3,000 miles!! I have a stock truck. It was just starting to cone up as if to be sucked into the intake. No dust so it was working but the filter minder was pulled way down and I have NEVER pulled a filter minder down. I ordered a fleetguard and put a napa gold in there until it gets here in a couple days.

That's not a good thing to hear about the new big filters. As far as I know there is only one part number for fleetguard air filters now and its the big one!
I'll have to see what my oil analysis comes back with.

I installed the larger Mopar filter (PN #53034249AA) on 6/15 in my stock air box. I have driven 3309 miles since and have not observed any of the abovementioned issues to date.

I'll keep an eye on the new filter. Mine was a fleetguard unit and had the mesh backing on it so I'm not too worried about it going anywhere.
I just need to find where that dust came from. I mean I can't expect a filter to be 100% efficient, but I'm sure I'm passing a lot less through than say a K&N!
I like the brake dust idea but I honestly don't think it is that. The color wasn't the same as the brake dust I get on the wheels. Plus the location of the inlet doesn't seem like it would pick up dust while in motion. I've seen vehicles before under heavy braking throw out a good cloud but it seemed to be moving away. Maybe under very hard braking and coming to a stop the cloud would move forward and be sucked in... but I don't drive like that at all. I follow way back, I learned a long time ago that tailgating doesn't pay!
For what its worth the dust ring was a slight tan color and very very fine, I'd call it a powder.
I'm starting to wonder if this goes on and isn't really noticed with a stock intake since it is beveled so that there isn't a place for dust to be deposited where the turbo and intake connect.
