My friends truck was doing the same thing a couple of of years ago so I did some research about fuel heater leaking and was informed the if the pig tail is wet on the inside you need to remove or replace the fuel heater as you are introducing air into your fuel system causing hard starts... long story short we just deleted it, put on a new fuel filter and it fired right up, he said it hadn't run that good for a long time.
We live in north eastern Washington and it gets fairly cold here and he never replaced it and has no problems not having it on the truck, but he does keep it plugged in during the coldest months of winter, it's number 3 in this image
Sounds like I may as well just delete it. If the fuel is going to hell up it won’t be just a problem there at the filter. It will start in the lines and the tank too I would think. That’s what they make winter fuel additives for. I also don’t know as aftermarket lift pumps/filtration systems such as AirDog have a fuel heater.
Sometimes we tend to over think things. In some cases that's good like for brakes and steering, but in this case? Just delete it or reseal it and see what happens.
I personally would never trade the cam driven LP for a carppy old Air Dog system that is way over priced with junk electric motors that tend to last 6-8 months.
I agree with AJ, start cheap, simple and easy

I don’t plan on getting an electric lift pump. I just was using them as an example of how I don’t know as the fuel heater is necessary. Definitely a lot cheaper to delete it anyway. I plan to get a HVLP piston lift pump in the near future.
You probably don't need that either. Mine has been absolutely fine with the diaphragm pump.
I might not NEED it, but I’ve heard many people say that it gained them a mpg or two and increased throttle response, so I figure I’ll give it a whirl. It’s a lot cheaper than replacing a burnt up injection pump. I’m amazed that mine didn’t get burned up when I had a diaphragm pump quit working. I’m on the second one now.
Seriously, they probably went bad from the crap in the tank. Might do the same thing to the piston pump if there is left over. Personally I would get it running correctly with what you have first and worry about the mods afterwards. But like they say "your mileage may vary."
Ahhh... Tailgate latches. Always a good ripping up your knuckles job...
Today, me and Mrs senile, blind, and stanky took a ride to fed ex to pick up a load of materials. Stopped for a bran muffin and fuel. Dog ate 80% of the muffin, as I'm already too fat. I got a cup of,tea, and we spent.quality time together before she crosses the rainbow bridge. Love her to death, but she's always been such a pain, and now she's on the decrepit side, its even, more so. I wouldn't get rid of her for anything other than nature, calling her, home. Yes, I'm sick...

You're a good man, I feel your pain. Take care of her and rest easy in the knowledge that you gave her a great home and life while she was here.
I believe the 1st Gen fuel heater is obsolete,
it can be replaced with a later model unit.
Did you know there is a single filter without heater and water drain option as well as a dual filter option avalble for our engine.
They are used on stationary engines.
I am currently running a fuel filter from NAPA that doesn't have the water in fuel sensor that filters to 4 micron. I have seen the dual filter heads for these engines, but I'm not sure I'd ever do that. I've thought of getting one of the frame mounted filter heads that just allows you to run a big filter or two under there. I figure I would then run the factory style filter with the water in fuel sensor in the factory location. That would help the lift pump by filtering out stuff so it didn't go through it. It would also give extra filtration which is always a plus.
Today I went and filled the truck up and the fuel gauge all of a sudden decided to work for now. Stayed where it should the whole way home. I also ran the wiring for my GlowShift 3-in-1 gauge. I need to drill the whole in the fire wall for the grommet to run sensors through, drill and tap manifold, and then make adjustments to the pod and get the gauge mounted and hooked up to the wiring.

Thanks.
Funny part is how dogs change you as a person. When I got married, some 25 years ago, I had never owned a dog. We always had cats, and I was a guy who loved puttie, it was all I knew
Anyway, wife demanded a dog shortly thereafter, and as normal, I fought the law, and the law won.
Within a very short period of time, that damb Beagle attached itself to my soul, and every dog we've had since has followed the same tradition. When my dogs pass, I have cried for weeks.
My mom passed, and I cried for about an hour. I know that sounds terrible, but my dogs have never , ever hurt me in an emotional way, other than them passing. I can't say,the same about any human I've known.
Unconditional love is what they say, and I believe it to be true. Put my wife and one of our dogs into a cars trunk for an hour, and lock them in. When I open it up, who will be,glad to see me? It ain't her....

Sorry for your pain. I feel the same about my mother in law. She's 98 and we keep worrying about getting that phone call. She's a spritely old girl though.
We had a cat die a couple years back. His name was William and he was the most affectionate cat ever. He'd get up on the table and put his paw on your hand until you petted him. I still miss him. Charlotte is still with us but she's not as affectionate unless you rattle the treat bag.
