Shelby- go to Genosgarage.com. Find the 1stGen section, and find the TST kdp tab kit. That kit, has everything you need minus the timing cover gasket( the kit uses rtv. I use both the gasket and the rtv. Your local O'rileys has the timing cover gasket, in the FelPro brand)to do that job. It comes with TST's instructions, but if you would like to know what's involved, you can download the instructions from that same page on Geno's site, the page that has the kit for sale. It's about a 4 hour job, including re painting the timing cover. It highly suggests to remove your radiator so you don't muff it up with the tools, but if you lay cardboard against it, you can do the job with radiator intact.

I've done that job 3 times, and guided others thru it. The only quirk that is easily turned into a problem is a need for a 36mm open end wrench to remove the fan clutch, and the threads on that clutch are left hand thread. So, facing the truck, the handle of the wrench turns clockwise to remove.

Do yourself a favor and invest in a Cummins barring tool, so you can lock the crankshaft in place, or you'll struggle trying to remove the bolts from the harmonic balancer.

Today I dropped the brick off at the Line-x dealer, and they capped off my once perfect, now rusting roof. Looks great, but it was,too dark to photograph.

No oxygen, no rust, eh? Time will tell.

Ground as much of the rust as I was able to be for I dropped it off. Better than having a body shop pretend to fix it for the 4th time.

The wife's Equinox battery died so I went to the battery shop to get a new one. While I was there the battery man smelled sulfur. We looked at the battery in the truck and it was cooking. I took it back to Oreillys and they replaced it free under warranty.

I swapped the battery in the wife's car and checked the voltage when it was running, 14.6 volts. I checked the voltage in the truck and it was 16.8 volts!

Either I have a bad ground on the regulator or the new ignition switch is causing problems. SO guess what I'm working on... again tomorrow.

Hmm maybe then instead of trying to bust it out this weekend, Ill gather these tools/kit and tackle it later. Thinking I will try to leave the rad in place, unless that interferes with properly doing the timing cover bolts.

Is this what you mean by the barring tool?

I've posted this before and it does not contain much in the way of useful instruction, but Cummins TSB 030003 concerns the KDP issue (attached below). Cummins instructs that for our First Gen engines ("bossed gear housing") the surface of the timing cover should be peened (as opposed to adding a tab). The tab sold by Cummins is for Second Gen engines.

I replaced my KDP w/o removing the rad. I covered it with a piece of cardboard so that it didn't get dinged up. A little tight but not bad at all. I used a Cummins crank seal and followed the included installation instructions EXACTLY. No leaks yet. I wouldn't waste the time pulling the rad.

I wish I had done this before I wasted my money with that worthless body shop that won't warranty their work.

The linex dude put the cab light on upside down, eh?

Lol

That's what I did with mine.

I peened the housing around the dowel pin. Nothing to "loosen". Nothing to "fall out / fall off", and more importantly... no cost..

didn't take much to do, and Faith said it was the most effective / permanent way of never thinking about it again....

Sure do miss her knowledge of these trucks.

Well, I checked the battery posts after the truck failed to start today. I tightened one and it fired right up as usual. I need to invest in some new ones. The Voltage under charge was still 16.8 volts so I checked the VR. It seemed to be bad so I installed a new one and same results. The new battery was low so I put the charger on it until it showed 100 percent and the voltage with the engine at idle was about 15.5. It still seems high but I don't know what it is supposed to be. My wife's car reads 14.8 when it's idling.

I googled 89 Dodge VR testing but I saw nothing for that particular VR. I saw a video to test the adjustable VR but I don't have one of them.

Does anyone know what the voltage at idle?

Edwin

I believe mine is around 14.3 at all rpms with the external voltage regulator. When the last one failed it over charged. I have mine on a relay and 2 ga cable running to the alt. If you have resistance in the system such as a bad fusible link the alt will have to increase voltage to charge the battery.

Impervious to rain, snow, salt, air, or chicken soup. Could it rot from the inside? I suppose so, if moisture gets beyond the second layer of steel inside the roof.

Ill be spraying oil / or,fluid film inside where I can get in there for inside.

13.8 to 14.2, depending on the, batteries charge. Fully charged, 13.8

Well, my son showed no interest in this 91.5. So, it's getting sold this weekend. Washed her up, and fixed the stuck tailgate. Was hoping the new owner didn't care for the headliner, as it is trashed. I was going to yank it out along with the still immaculate trim pieces inside the cab, but he says he'll take it and have it redone, lol. I asked him if he wanted me to soup up the virgin pump, but he says leave it stock.

Wish I could keep it, but the money from the sale is going into something I really need to get me around my property. In a way I'm glad, as I hated seeing it not driven, collecting oak leaves and spider webs.

Enlighten us....What is this "something" for your property??? Does it have tires or tracks?
