I changed the oil again on my motor, dumped the Rotella T6 5W40 and put in some regular T4 15W40 and a new oil filter. The rattling is about a 3rd in volume compared to the synthetic...so a step in the right direction? Next is to adjust the valves again, and perhaps tighten them up a tad over the stock settings....maybe .002 tighter?

 

Thought that would have disappeared by now, TC. Seems I've been throwing this one out a lot lately, to folks worried about a troublesome noise, and that is to check the crank shaft end play.
After all the repairs were made on my rig, with the replacement of a broken thrust bearing, no joke, but my truck sounded sooo much quieter. Sounds like everything was tight.

Bothers me at times, wondering how long I drove the truck with a damaged TB, cause it made all kinds of clatter, which I thought was normal for these trucks.

 

Or at least pay the $25 for an oil analysis check with Blackstone labs, to see if you have an unusual amount of metals in your used oil

 

I just had a first class mechanic put a stethoscope on my tranny noise. He thinks it's the rebuilt trans I just had installed. Since I had the flywheel and clutch replaced at the same time there was some speculation as to whether it might be the chinese throwout bearing or maybe the clutch slave cylinder is letting the bearing rub. It makes a clattering noise when the trans is in neutral and the clutch is engaged (pedal up) that goes away when the pedal is pushed down. He also asked if these trucks are supposed to have a spring to pull the clutch forks back away from pressure plate fingers when the pedal is up. Mine doesn't have one. Does anyone know? I'll look at the FSM and see if one is called out.

I've seen suggestions to go down to .090 and .019, but never any tighter than that. Chancing bent rods, maybe?

 

Topped off getrag as there is a small leak somewhere on the front. Read there is a rubber plug of some sorts and of course the front bearing but either way the trans isn't coming out before our trip to Wyoming. I changed the fluid and filled to the top pto plug level a few months ago and have done a few desert trips and a Vegas trip so being down maybe 1/2 a quart in that many miles isn't much.
Will top off again before Wyoming just as precaution.

 

Today I used the brick to transport a broken window to the window shop. Mother nature poked me with her screw you stick , as I had my 10 x 10 pop up canopy fly through my second story bedroom window just for ha ha"s. Gusts were pretty good around here, and I guess ill be ordering a new canopy as that one that tried to get in my house broke its legs on the way back down to earth with the help of its peeved former user....

 

Thanks Tcows! I picked up a 4' piece of solid 3/4" round stock the other day thinking to use it for mirror mounts like yours. The drilling and tapping should be fun...

Ollies Winch gizmo. Very inventive, flexible and ingenious way of doing a winch... someday, of which I will replicate myself.

Not sure if Ollie invented it, or just copy and pasted it. Either way, I think it's cool...

 

I saw a much cheesier version of a winch plate in my Northern Tools catalog and the light bulb over my head lit up. From there it was just beer engineering after dinner one night. I torched some scrap metal out of an old flat bed head ache rack. Then I torched some welded on hooks off the same bed and welded those on the back of my plate. I then drilled the needed holes on the plate and used 2nd gen cab mounts as rubber feet. The winch was a cheap winch rated at 9000# I bought years back from Northern Tools for under $300. Other than the beer, the welding wire /Argon and OXY/ACT gas it was just using things around the shop. I have used it for all sorts of goofy stuff since I made it. It is very convenient to be able to use it on the front / back of any truck or chained to the front of my trailer too drag stuff on with.
It is easier to loan out to a friend in need than your truck with the winch permanently attached to it.

I like it when that money you have ear marked for some cool truck stuff gets sucked up in a crap tornado.

 

I finally got around to following this procedure https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...wheels-248980/ to center my front wheels. ON my last trip I was constantly annoyed by the shaking.

Before I loosened the lug nuts I checked the centering and the left wheel was running about 1/8 inch out of true. The right side was out but not as much. The coned lug nuts cost me about $2.50 and it took all of 20 minutes to do the procedure. Unfortunately I have to wait until 8:00 or so to test on the freeway because of rush hour traffic usually doesn't go over 30 mph on a good day.
