Water pumps

Hi, All. Long time no post. Hope everyones holiday season is going well.

My water pump went out. It was a fairly new pump put on May of 07 at around 251K, now 276K.

Dealer wants $197 for a new one.
Advanced wants $56 w/lifetime warranty.
CaseIH wants $113

Id much rather go with a NEW, preferably genuine Cummins part so Case would be my best bet, no?

Also, the fins on the current bad pump and the CaseIH pump are very different. The current pump has was looks like two disks with the blades sandwiched between them. The Case pump has open fins which kinda resembles a spinning blade in a blender.

I remember there being a thread discussing the difference and improvement of the fin design but I cant seem to find it.

I guess my question is, which fin design would be best and who would ya'll pick for parts? Im leaning towards CaseIH.

Thanks

Got a heavy truck parts distributor nearby? I got a new aftermarket unit (with the same impeller style as your old pump) for $56 about 4 years ago. It's been fine.

Given your options I'd go with the Advance pump. I don't like the open impeller.

Thanks, Wanna.

By the way, does anyone have the torque specs for the pump bolts?

I'm runing the cheapo advanced one, no complaints. Havent noticed any differences yet, but it is 20 degrees here though. I would go ahead and change the thermostat and flush the coolant while ur at it.

The thermostat was done back in 07 as well. Neither the t-stat or pump was bad in 07, I just replaced it as preventative maintenance. I thought about changing the t-stat this time around as well but I think and hope it will be ok.

Mine came from NAPA and it has a closed face impeller. The original was open faced. I forget the price but it was a lot cheaper than Cummins and it came with a new 'o'ring. It has been in service for a couple years so far and no problems.

In my humble opinion closed face impeller pumps tend to be more efficient than the open face counter part. The open face pumps require a close fit in the block to work properly. When the bearing fails sometimes it tends to rub the impeller into the block, opening up clearances that effect pump peformance. The closed face pump eliminates the need for this tight clearance fit. Both styles work. The extra clearance does not seem to be an issue in most csaes.
