Hypothetical mileage question
I've got the 2 trucks listed in my sig, and the D250 auto is getting better mileage all around. On the highway it gets 20mpg avg, and mixed driving its gotten 18mpg on 2 tanks.
The W250 manual just got 16mpg mixed driving. But its also heavier than average with the flatbed and extra 100gallons of fuel. Even without the fuel it weighs about 7K lbs. I can't really say what it gets on the highway empty. The only time its on a highway trip is with a trailer in tow grossing 16k and then it averages 12 maybe 14mpg.
One thing to consider is on the highway your drag coefficient is probably going to make a bigger difference than anything else. My 2wd has a normal bed with a topper which makes it about the best aerodynamic brick there is. haha Where my 4wd has a flat bed which really kills your drag coefficient.
Also in general 4wd's sit higher than 2wd's so in my opinion 4wd's are handicapped out of the gate. Also in town mileage on a 4wd will suffer due to the extra weight.
Just my observations.

And for those that think higher gearing is the be-all for mpg it ain't always so. My truck actually lost about 1mpg average going from 33 to 34" tires. I thought it had gained a bit but forgot the speedo still has about a 2-3% error when I calc'd it the first time. I suspect it would be at or better strictly highway, but it's using more fuel than that to make up for acceleration in around-town driving.
