I figure that the sloppy torque converter cancels out any gains from weight reduction, etc?

I'm still trying to talk myself out of that W350 (although my bank account is doing a pretty good job right now ). The frames seem identical. Even the springs look the same. Only difference is the front sway bar (do all tons have that?) and training wheels. Oh I would reckon a Getrag is lighter in weight than the 518?
The Frames ARE the same, thats why they look the same

the 1 ton truck should have overloads on the rear.

buy that 1 ton truck and you'll like it for towing ALOT more then your current auto truck.

Best just go ahead and buy that truck.

Much better to regret a purchase, than to let it get gone and always wish you had of bought it.

Money always seems to re-accumulate itself after it's spent; if you get stingy and hang onto it, then the refrigerator will lay down and take what you didn't spend anyway, so go ahead and buy the truck.

I will agree that in stock form, a manual tranny will get better mileage than an auto. However, if you build the auto, and add a nice torque converter, the auto can get better mileage than a manual.

Get the W350, everyone knows Dually's are better SRW trucks anyway.

If you tow a lot, they really are though...

Nope, But I'm old enough to work out fuel mileage and am old enough to do a search on google to see O/D ratios for both trannies.

AGREED, got to pay to play. But when i can't fill up my tuck i drive the beater car . There is no comparing MPG to that (gets 42 mpg) .

Most with a "dually" bed do not have the over-loads; the cab-chassis trucks usually do.

My last three tanks - all city driving - ran at an average 18.46 MPG which suprised me especially on winter mix diesel. My last OTR trip, cruise control on and set for 65 mph gave me 22.71 MPG on summer mix. BTW my truck tips the scale at 7100 lbs. You can see my mods below. The right foot can make a BIG difference.

Why not throw the 3.07 rear end in the 5spd truck and watch it make fuel That is where alot of the auto guys make up the fuel mileage against the 5spd trucks is the rear gear ratio

Get a photobucket, it makes it so easy to downsize and then you just copy and paste the IMG code on here and it shows right up.
