"Hypothetical" Question: 55 MPH to Reverse?
So what kind of damage could one expect to see if one were to shift from 2nd gear to reverse at 55 miles per hour on a freeway overpass?
All hypothetically, of course...
All hypothetically, of course...
my cousin once in a fit of rage had his truck floored in reverse backing out of a driveway, and then without letting up on the throttle he through it to drive. After that all he had was forward... and he broke some parts...

Let's hypothetically say that "Joe" shifts the vehicle into reverse, there's a clunk from the tranny, the engine stalls, and then "Joe" happens to be able to shift it back into neutral, start the engine again and drive away?
This particular hypothetical situtation ends with a fully functional tranny, but "Joe" wants to know what might be damaged in the tranny in case this event were to ever really happen to "Joe".
Particularly, Joe will swear that after such a hypothetical event, his torque convertor will become really really slippery. But Joe wants to know if he would think this because of a placebo effect or because he really would have destroyed his TC.
Joe also doesn't understand how the vehicle will continue to move forward in reverse gear, even if the engine is off... Ultimately Joe's just trying to figure out what would really happed in this hypothetical event and wants to know what he took a bajillion of miles off of...
Well, is anybody confused yet? (Maybe I'll just admit to it.... Nah...

When I was a freshman in HS, my buddies informed me that I HAD to spend my lunch hour on the front lawn of Royal Oak Dondero HS cause crazy Bob P. was "Gonna Do It".
Being the car nuts that we were, we all sat there waiting until it was time to go to our next class. Just as we were about to go inside, someone yelled "Here he comes!" This guy would come blazing in his 50 Studebaker at about 60, slip the std. tranny into nuetral, lock the brakes just long enuff, grab reverse while he floored the gas and dumped the clutch.
The guy was just another dork till he pulled that move off, and instantly became a hero to all of us fools. Oh Yeah....them were the days!

Okay, "Joe",
Assuming that the transmission is unbreakable, and the engine un-stallable, what would happen if you shifted from direct to reverse at 55 mph?
The clutch for direct gear would release, and the reverse clutch would engage. This would cause the driven part of the torque converter to rotate backwards, generating a lot of heat in the transmission fluid, but not doing any harm.
Now in real life, I would expect the reverse clutch to grenade, or maybe the reverse gear, or input shaft. I would not expect the vanes in the converter to bend or break, but I suppose it is a possibility.
Has "Joe" checked the stall speed on his torque converter since the incident? That will let "Joe" know if the converter is acting differently somehow.
Did "Joe" check his fluid to see if it was burnt?

Well this is not hypothetical , when I was in high school [71] ,I was riding with someone that had a 69 GTO and going down the freeway , and I'm sure he was going faster than 55 jamed it into reverse and hit the throdle , the way I remember it it was to prove his hot rod would lay rubber at freeway speeds, well he did it twice and back to school - that was our lunch- now if you were driving next to us you'ld think that it did peal out at that speed , becouse it did put out a large cloud of white smoke stopping trafic behind us. the thing about it was it may have been the first smart thing I did at that age , was to never go for a ride with that guy again , and I was an
adrnelin chaser , or should I say I still am.
P.S. I for got , Iam sure it must have damaged something , but it did get us back to school , and I didn't hang out with him anymore so I don't when it died .

My uncle once had someone bet him his old 60's or 70's Chevy something or other couldn't take reverse at 60mph... Well it did and won the bet for like 20 bucks but had to put a tranny in it not too long after. This is also the same uncle who planted it at the top of a 25 foot chip pile just for the fun of it. So many cars went bye bye... so many...
I think Joe broke some thing??
actualy it may be the low/reverse band. Have Joe put the hypothetical trans in low gear and see if he has "Engine brakeing" ( acts like manual trans in low) if not the band has become hypothetically non functional
