Hypothetical Question - Who Pays?

So, hypothetically speaking, say I were to purchase a product from a well known, out of town builder and pay a local shop to install it. Shortly thereafter, the product fails, the local shop R&Rs it and I ship it back to the builder who repairs/replaces the product at no charge. Obviously the local shop needs to be paid for their labor but who should be responsible to pay that bill; me or the out of town builder?

Guessing you are talking about the tranny, depends how the warranty is written, if it say they will pay for the work, then they should pay, if the warranty states they will only repair or replace the parts but don't cover labor, then you pay.

Well, it's not the tranny and I didn't get any paperwork with the original product. I was actually trying to get a hold of them to get a receipt and copy of the warranty when this happened.

Normally, in my experience, if you have another shop install it, you are responsible for the labor. Most companies will only pay for the parts.

Yeah, that's what I've heard/read as well. It's just frustrating to have to shell out more money due to an issue with someone else's product.

I understand what you are saying exactly, but if you were the product supplier, and someone else installed a part, would you want to cover their labor? Maybe they screwed it up? I'm not saying that is what happened, but you have to look at it from both sides.

You can always talk to them and see if they'll meet you half way... I don't see it in your cards, tho.

And I see their side as well. I'm not holding anything against them either, I know that they do great work and sometimes stuff happens. I'm definitely going to contact them and see if they're willing to reimburse me anything. Can't hurt anything.

If its a reputable company that supplied the part then they should be able to determine the cause of the failure and if it is their product or the installers fault. Even then it all depends on the fine print of the warranty.

There are a few shops that do provide a warranty even on the install costs, Carli is one on there ball joints.

So ugh what broke?
