Adjusting the valves??

Where can I find instructions on the proper procedure for adjusting the valves on my 12 valve?

This site?

Elsewhere on the web?

Thanks,
CR

I did mine and it was real easy. It's not necessary to get it exactly on TDC. Just roll it over until it's close then adjust the six, roll it over 1 turn and do the other six. You'll probably find some valves have LESS than the spec if it's been a long while since they were done. This is because as the valve wears, it receeds into the head which reduces the clearance. Eventually, if the valve lash isn't periodically adjusted you'll burn valves when the lash gets down to zero.

What are the benefits of adjusting them tighter or looser than stock, or are there any??

No benefit to looser, but you can get a little better top end by going a touch tighter. PDR recommends 0.009 and 0.018 on a 12 valve.

Cool, did it today. Except for crouching under the hood for an hour, no big deal. Reminds me of my BMW R100 GS.

Thanks for the link, Chrisreyn!

hmmm....sounds like I better adjust my valves. I took a quick look at the website.....I'm completely lost I'll have to reread it again later. I also noticed it said to replace the valve cover gaskets witht he black ones and not the gray ones that look similar. I changed mine about a year ago cuz they were diried and cracked and I swear the guys at cummins gave me gray ones. They fit fine and I haven't had any problems.....that I know of. I'll have to double check and see if I have the gray ones. What's the difference? Or is it that Geno's only carries the black ones

I've had great results with the grey ones. I've had them off and on several times and they are nice and flexible still. I will buy new ones next time though. I wouldn't mind to have the grey ones again. My older black ones seemed to get hard and brittle quicker. Could just be me too.

I replaced the black ones with gray ones. That is what the Cummins place gave me and they were much more flexible. That was on my 97. My 91 had gray on it and they have been off since I had it and they were still flexible. Seems the black ones were hard and leaked something awful on my 97.

Whatever you do, don't set them any tighter that recommended, and make sure your engine is at the proper temp before you adjust. If they are set too tight you can roast the valve seat. It kills your power to have the valves leaking also
I run mine three to four times to make sure I have them cositent and right on the specs that wannadiesel gave.
