Auto Meter Tach Pickup

I installed an auto meter tach on my truck and the instructions are vague about mounting the alternator pickup. I held it up against the alterntor in various positions and places and I couldnt get the tach to work. So where and how does everyone install the pickup on the alternator?
Thanks

Mine's about in the middle, but a little towards the rear. I had to shift it back and forth a little to get it to stop bouncing at high RPM, but it works.

I used the clamp provided in the kit. It has to be tight for it to work.

I have a picture of where I put mine in my gallery...

The directions say to mount in on the alternator laminations, but of course our alternators don't have laminations, so that isn't really an option.

I mounted my pick up right underneath the passenger side lip of the alternator, then ran the pick-up lines on the heater line and through the wiring harness.

They gave me a radiator clamp that was about 2 feet long... I chopped a foot off of it and still had six inches of slack that I tucked under the alternator mount.

Judging by my super-high-accuracy Chinese optical tach, I got the Autometer dialed right in.

Ah, but it does have laminations. They are just hidden inside the case. They are about where they would be on an alternator that has visible laminations, if that makes any sense.

Hey Dave, you have a part number for that Tach? I don't need one to run, but it would be a good tuning tool.
Thanks,
Mark
