Adjusting valves on a 24 valve.

I was at the Dodge dealer and the manager informed me that the early 24 valve models need the valves adjusted every 50,000 miles. Mine has 70,000 on it already. And it's an early 24v model. The later 24V ones need it every 100,000 or 150,000 miles.
Anyway, I've never had anyone but me adjust the valves in anything I've ever owned. But I've never had a diesel until now. So I am a little nervous about the whole thing. Either I need to do it fairly soon, or have the dealer do it. Also, It's my first automatic tranny, so I'm not quite sure how to move the crank a few degrees this way or that (up to now I've just put it in gear and pushed the truck up or back a little).
Does anyone out there have enough experience with diesel valves to say if it's not different from gassers????

Any help would be appreciated. Thanx,

Re:Adjusting valves on a 24 valve.

just did my first one at 140,000 and still the same setting from the factory .010 intake and .020 Exhaust ;D didn't have to adjust anything. you can also turn over the engine by using the bolt on the alt pully. just go slow...

I think that the specs are intake .005-.015 and Exhaust.015-.030 might want to check on that for sure that just of the top of my head...

The order is for TDC adj. 1 Intake and Exhaust, 2 intake, 3 Exhaust, 4 intake, and 5 Exaust.... for TDC compression stroke for Number 6 Cylinder Adj. 2 exhaust, 3 intake, 4 exhaust, 5 intake, and 6 intake and exhaust..
double check this is what I use for I ISL engines at work, A am pritty sure its the same on the ISB engine

Its very easy... if something is way out of spec's then you are doing something wrong.... or something major is wrong ;D

The proper way to rotate the engine is to use a special barring tool that goes into a hole in the bellhousing and contacts the starter teeth. You should be able to get one from Cummins.

As far as valve lash, I have found that most engines have differnt specs depending on the year and CPL number. The specs should be on the data plate on the side of the engine.

The order I adjust valves is to find #1 TDCC then bar the engine and adjust the valves in fifring order. 1-5-3-6-2-4.

The easiest way to determine if a clyinder is at TDCC is to look for the companion cylinder. If both valves are opern, then its partner can be adjusted. 1-6, 5-2, 3-4 are the companion cylinders.

Their are lots of short cuts to doing a tune up (adj Valve lash that is) but I am just stating per cummins service manual. You can also remove the breather on the front of the enging and it is marked TDC for (cylinder 1) and bar over 180* for TDC on Cylinder 6. Its just a lot more simple for some one that has never done it to go by the book.. not that I do ;D

But if you use it, make sure that you know which cylinder is at TDCC, and which cylinder is at TDCE check #1 & #6 to see which one the rocker arms are loose on.

Dont these motors have a hydraulic valve train? I thought they never had to be adjusted?

Mine is coming up on 126000 and I have never had the valve cover off.

Checked the Cummins website, Dodge Ram FAQ, and they list the 24-vlaver should be checked and adjusted at 150,000.
