adjusting valves
i went to adjust the valves today, but i had a very hard time find tdc. i was using the alternator nut method. i guess with this method you need two people. do you have to push on the pin until it pushes into the gearing. i was pretty stumped on how to find it. 220,000 miles and still hasn't been adjusted. i heard of a crude way of doing it. when the #6 cylinder's intake and exhaust are both open the #1 is at tdc, or close, is this correct. a little help would be appreciated. i am taking it in next week to have the injector timing done, probably 4-5 degrees advanced. thanks guys, this site rules.

I did mine last weekend using the method you are talking about.
Above taken from HERE
I turned the engine over a couple of times watching it before I called it good. Adjusted the recommended springs and then rotated again for cylinder #1. Seemed to quite the engine down and help the fuel milage but I wont know that until my next tank. Mine were way out, I am guessing the PO never had them adjusted.
Its actually pretty easy using the above method and didnt really take all that long.
To locate TDC @ #1, watch #6 until it's at crossover (one rocker going up, the other going down at the same time). This is called the "companion cylinder" method. Adjust the proper valves, then rotate the engine over until #6 is at TDC, which means #1 will be at crossover.
