93 CTD died now what???

Hi, I did repair a leaky o ring and that went well. Then when it started it was clattery, and the white smoke that smelled almost like gasoline was present. I filled the tank with fresh #2 24 gallons and it was getting quieter, and smoking a lot less. After about 10 miles or so I thought I would give some go pedal. I wasn't over-speeding the engine, as it was just starting to build some boost and then as if I you turned the key off it died, no bucking, no jerking, no smoke, just died.
I have fuel on top of the filter on the manifold bleed thing. I have a solenoid pick (I tapped it to be sure the plunger was moving). The manual kill is snapping to run position. I do not have any hi pressure at my injectors. Hard to believe a VE pump would do that to me. Or should I look somewhere else? Where would a good source of a VE pump be? Thanks for your help, Artie

Did you have the pump top off? I had the governor spring fall off one time, I must not have had it hooked quite right when I put the pump top back on. The truck ran fine until we got on it, then it just died like yours and would not refire.

Thanks wanna, I didn't have the top off, but looks like I'll be there soon. I just replaced the cover oring opposite of the ksb. However the IP on this 190k truck HAS been tampered with in the past? Just because I didn't do doesn't mean it hasn't been done.
At low engine speed the gov. spring just lays there until I reach 2850 - 3200 RPM? If the spring came off what limits the rpm? I can't do much today... pickin up the granddaughter from school, be in the IP soon!

Just throwing this out there.... when I pulled the gear I was sure not to damage the seal, and it "looked" good. When this happenned I did have the KSB energized to see if I wanted more timing, could the seal blowed out on acct. of higher internal IP pressure? And if so would this do a sudden shut down? and perhaps put some more engine oil on the dipstick?

I don't think your KSB would cause any surge in fuel pressure, that is controlled by your lift pump. If your oil level on your dipstick is going up then more then likely your front shaft seal is toast and you have fuel leaking into your oil.

KEYWAY sheared... I was the last one there, my fault. Is this a common size? Do I need a cummins part or is this a popular size? .160 X .400. Maybe my Briggs & Stratton may have one...

No, a P-pump has no keyway.

You damaged the gear?

Thanks, Wanna, The tapered bore of the gear is slightly scored, on the fine line of use or discard it. And I always error on the side of caution. So Yes, I'm looking for a gear, keyway and a lockwasher is cracking. I had it running without the timing cover and the gear "sings" would that be normal? Thanks, Artie

Singing gears means there's not enough lash.
