04 CTD Died (stalled)

Hello all,
Yesterday on my way home by truck stalled/died.

Specs: 04 Dodge CTD 2500, 4x4, 46k miles, completely stock.

Simply put, it simply died/stalled.
I got it to start 2-3 times, but it would idle for about 3-5 seconds then die.

I changed the fuel filter about 1k miles ago, and drained the resv. with using the pep-**** on the bottom.
Currently its on about 1/4 tank.
I thought the filter might be clogged, so I pulled it.
Seemed clean, but it looked much lower than when I swapped it out last time.

My buddy with an 06 was helping me, & he noticed that when I turn the ignition on, he couldn't hear the usual sound of a pump.

His is newer than mine so he doesn't get the pump sound (I believe they changed the set up in 05/06).

From a few of my searches here, it sounds like it might be the lift pump.
Am I correct in my thinking?
Is the LP attached to the back of the filter housing with 2 leads and fuel lines going into it? (Only ask because my friend with the 06 thought it might be in tank).

Anyone else have similar stories/solutions.

PS-I called the local dealer (Lithia) this morning, and they said it's not covered under warranty..
I was like ***?
I thought it would be.
He also referred to it as a "transfer pump" and said it wasn't covered because it wasn't part of the engine.

SYMPTOM
P0628-LOW VOLTAGE DETECTED AT THE FUEL LIFT PUMP

WHEN MONITORED
While the key is on.

SET CONDITION
The voltage detected on the Fuel Lift Pump is above a calibrated value for a calibrated amount on time.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
  • Loose connection
  • Ground circuit open
  • Lift pump shorted to voltage
  • Lift pump
  • ECM
I would check the lift pump for voltage..to make sure your getting power.

Time to upgrade to an aftermarket lift pump. Pretty common on the filter mounted pump. Install a Walbro set-up and you will have no more problems. Great set-up and easy install. Wakes the truck up. www.glacierdiesel.com They also sell the kit on this website.

I had the FASS fuel system(150gph) installed about 3 years ago and glad I did. This sounds to me to be a lift pump problem.I would install a Fass, glacier or walboro.IMHO anything after market is better than stock.coobie

The dealer is full of poop because it is covered under the Cummins engine warranty. They will install the in tank lift pump. If you want to go to an aftermarket fuel pump now is the time. I had mine changed at 26,000 miles. They will drop the tank and replace the fuel pickup/sender unit to replace it with the new one which will make it a pain in the butt to upgrade the fuel pump later due to no pickup on the new unit. If you want to stay stock you will be fine to go with the new free warranty fuel pump.

Cool Thanks.

I'd rather upgrade to an after market pump, but this couldn't have happened at a worse time.
I'm a teacher, and do not get paid for June-August, so money is very tight right now (My savings just covers standard expenses).

I'm going to the warranty way for now...
If I upgrade later, I can pull it at a planned date (rather than rushing now so I can use it while working on my house).

Like spooler said the dealer is full of poop.I had mine replaced at around
62,000 under warranty with the in tank version.now at 97,000 and no
problems. The only thing I had to pay for was a new fuel filter because they
wouldn't warraty the repair without new filter.

Good news. Just talked to the Warranty person at Lithia Dodge (Concord CA) & she said it is covered....

However, there is the $100 deductable for it.

Its the Cummins fuel system warranty. Its NOT considered CHRYSLER POWERTRAIN. Ask her to look up DEDUCTABLES in their poilcy handbook or you call 1-800-992-1997(Chrysler)and ask THEM to get in contact with dealer and explain WARRANTYS.
