leaking fuel filter...help?!

Hey guys...

Just drove the truck for the first time in a month yesterday for anything longer than 2 miles...(been in the hospital, etc...) I went for a 1hr drive, stopped at my destination and let the truck idle for a min or so... got out, and smelled fuel. noticed a 10" round puddle on the ground. I grabbed the flashlight (it was 5:30 am) and noticed the underneath of the truck was wet with fuel...

Looks like its coming out of the bottom of my purolator filter where the water seperator (screws in??) is. Although it's time to change it anyway... (10k miles)

anyone have any thoughts as to what might be wrong? is the new fuel eating up my seals in there? Or am i just dealing with a common problem?

thanks all!

J

at least twice i have had to replace the water seperator when i did the filter. both times i inspected very carefully and it looked good. only to put it on, and when i fired the truck fuel would pour out.
I think the seperator is about a 7$ part but its much easier to do it when you have the filter off.

You're right, a few people have reported that their Purolators have cracked.

Mine did the same when the new fuel came out. Somewhere it was reported that the old-style o-rings would shrink when exposed to the new fuel. I tightened my filter down, and since have replaced it. No problems since that one time.

i suppose it would make sense to do a proper diagnostic, and clean it up real good....fire it up, and see where it's really leakin' from, right?

so i guess it could be either the filter, or the fuel seperator at this point...

thanks guys!!!

I had my fleetguard crack at the boss where the sensor screws into the housing. I thought it was the sensor, bought one and wound up having to replace the filter instead. I'd replace the filter first before the sensor. Although it's tight, you can get the sensor off without removing the filter.

Any one know if Fleetguard has a filter that will fit a 94 without the water sensor? I have never seen water come out when I have drained a bit out so am thinking a fellow could get along without it, if there was a filter that would do the job without the sensor.....

I'm sure there is but another way is to plug the hole with a common, availible from most autoparts oil drain plug.
Don't know the size offhand...

everything seems to be fixed...a new napa gold/Wix, and everything is cool...

anyone have a preference to filter types ( i know most say Cummins/Dodge, etc...for the oil...i've used the Baldwin filters on the fleet trucks...) i'm also running a bypass oi filter too.... anyone like anything specific for fuel filters?

thanks guys..

Several years ago I left a Fleetguard fuel filter in the solvent tank overnight. In the morning the blue paint had peeled off, it was white and said Wix on it.
Napa Gold is Wix and apparently Fleetguard also.
I started using Napa Gold fuel filters about ten years and over 200k miles ago until a friend who sold his Dodge gave me a case of Fleetguards.
Never had and problems with the Napa/Wix.
