6 speed cooling plates

Any one using the finned cooling plates for the 6 speed ?. I seen a set that replace the PTO cover. And I was wondering if they are worth the $$

Just got a set from Standard Transmissions in Texas. Really nice pieces!! Talked to a couple of other rv haulers that had them and they had seen a drop in temp. Plus the extra fluid capacity has to good too.

Anyone monitoring the 6 speed temps; What are you finding while working hard?

It's overkill for a 5600 transmission, but I use them anyway, because I like overkill. They not only cool, they allow for an extra quart or so of fluid.

I've got a pair of Fastcoolers and an Eaton transmission filter setup from Gino's - I put one Fastcooler on one of the PTO's on the 5600, and the Eaton filter on the other side. The second Fastcooler I use on the transfer case PTO to cool the fluid in there. Using Redline MTL in the transmission, and Redline hightemp ATF in the transfer case - like I said, overkill. Did it because I pull TT's over desert mountains in summer.

No difference unloaded or when running on the highway. Where I notice it is when pulling grades at slow speeds; there's a good 50*F+ difference.

Brother tows a 25' JAZZ 5er and a Snowmobile trailer to hall his 2 quads and 2 motocycles. He says on a steep pull 6th builds some heat. he downshifts to 5th and it is fine. He says he seems to build heat in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th too. He has a '04 555 NV5600. I will see if he will give his 2 cents on this question.

Trans-Cool

There is a new product coming out shortly, if not already, called a Trans-Cool. I saw the first ones built at May Madness '05. They are similar to the Fastcoolers but, are "supposed to be" more efficient.

The fins are longer and they have cooling fins inside, as well. Supposed to dissipate heat better. They advertise that they will drop your transmission temps. up to 30 deg's. They hold an additional quart of fluid. They have a temp. guage port with removable plug.

I talked to the guy that came up with the idea, built the first mock-up and then, I believe, sold the rights to Trans-Cool. If anyone would like any more info. on these things they can be reached at 1-866-690-2665.

I'm not connected, in any way, with this company. I was just impressed with the idea and the quality of the product. It's really neat to see someone come up with a better "mousetrap".

Let me correct a little info and add some info to what my brother posted

Y22man said - "Brother tows a 25' JAZZ 5er and a Snowmobile trailer to hall his 2 quads and 2 motocycles. He says on a steep pull 6th builds some heat. he downshifts to 5th and it is fine. I have a 2003 High Output cummins with the NV5600 or six speed and do see elevated temps when towing. I can see it with my 5'er by itself or with the double tow set up of the 5'er and a 19 foot snowmobile trailer (with 2 atv's and 2 dirt bikes inside).

My 5'er weighs approx 9,500 wet, and the 5'er and sled trailer together weigh approx 14,000.

sixth gear seems to generate heat (only when towing) for me. I can watch it climb on up to 210f or higher (if I let it) on my gauge. My solution to cool it is to slow down and tow in 5th (I think 5th is direct drive). after 20-30 mins of driving in 5th, the temp will drop from 210 to 180, I can drop into sixth gear and am off again.

This heat buildup for me happens on the flat (much slower to build up heat) or climbing grades around Utah. The steeper the grade of course the faster the temp climbs.

I am glad to hear the fastcooler type are working, I investigated that and have not gone that route. I am seeking more of an auto tranny type cooler to solve my heat issues. I would like something to pump the tranny fluid up front of the radiator and back into the tranny but have not found anything like that yet.

When I first posted about elevated tranny temps in 2003 I got boo'd off this board as everyone said I was smokin dope or something and that manual trans don't need coolers, however I still maintian my setup does build heat.

I have gone slow up some mountain dirt roads towing and also see the heat climb in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as my brother mentioned. There is one dirt road in particular where you go from approx 4500 feet to 10,000 feet in about 12 miles. on a really hot day towing doubles in 2nd up this hill, I had to stop half way and let it cool for an hour.

If anyone knows of another solution to the fastcooler or similar setup, I am sure interested.

Thanks
