ok what are the plates ?? #4,5,8 ETC. and where do they actually go and what is the purpose. Be kind I'm noobie.
I know TST makes them.and it doesn't look like it should cost that much but I guess were paying for the engineering.??
my 95 is supposedly? making 270/640 without a plate . these numbers seem optimistic judging by what I am reading here the last few days.
the trans has already been upgraded so I want to know my next logical HP step. Re:alrighty then ,I'll just ask > PLATES? HP upgrades

The 215 hp injector pumps put out more fuel/power than the 160 & 180 pumps. Plates 10,11 & 12 are mainly for the 215 pumps and 5,6 & 8 for the 160/180 pumps.

You should find answers to other plated related questions at www.tstproducts.com.

crossy ....

I don't think your HP is optimistic with what you're running now ... put in a set of 370's and a 16cm3 turbine housing ... then tell us how big the smile is on your face

How can I find out what pump I have? My truck already came with the plate that is sapposed to achieve 230/605. I wouldn't be opposed to MORE POWER.

Tim-D, a 97 auto would have the 180 hp P-7100 pump. The TST #8 plate is rated for 230/605 with the 180 hp pump. A #6 is supposedly good for 250/635 in the 180 pump.

Jerry

Thank you.
now my next question is, will the #6 plate make more smoke. the reason I ask is I finaly figured out how to adjust the fuel pump with the star wheel, and a small adjustment made for considerably more smoke with WOT.

Tim,

I have the # 6 plate, plus the other mods you will see in my sig. Smoke, or lack of, is largely dependent upon boost vs fuel delivery- So much adjustment can be made with the AFC- course adjustment by moving the whole housing forward (more fuel) or back (less). The star wheel allows a finer adjustment of the same. I like to set the housing and use very little tension on the spring (star wheel). That way fuel delivery can respond to boost quicker.

Right now, I have very little smoke, mostly light grey at WOT. My throttle response is getting good. I just put in the Piers 3k GSK and it definitely makes a difference. You can install it through the top, where the fuel plate normally sits (I learned that on another thread). It was fairly easy using just a big screw driver and a magnetic retriever. I just carefully rolled the engine over backwards using a 22mm socket on the alternator pulley nut. Now I'm thinking about making my auto shift at a higher rpm- manually shifting at about 2700 is really fun! ;D

crossy,

I would suspect that Jessup pump tune you mention would have something to do with your fuel plate, moved up at least, but likely something hotter than stock.

www.piersdiesel.com

the 3000 governor spring kit allows for more fueling on the top end. your stock truck starts cutting the fuel at around 2200rpms. the lower # plate, essentially the more horsepower yo're going to get. sliding a plate forward gives more horsepower too (more fueling) with more smoke and higher egts. you can slide your stock plate forward to get some more fuel too, but the horsepower/torque/fueling curve isn't as good (matched) as an aftermarket plate.

Tim,

What 98 RAMMER said.

The governor spring kit is available from many of the vendors listed on the links page.
A great guy to talk to is Rod at Wildcat Diesel (http://www.wildcatdiesel.com/index.htm).

I was referring to moving the AFC housing forward or back. See
http://www.dieselpage.com/tstpk.htm
for a good overview on the fuel plates and AFC adjustments.

Could a timing adjustment cut down on the amount of smoke? If so what should I set it at. I live in SoCal and the treehuggers are going to hunt me down, even though my smoke is gray (not black) and only at low RPMs.

Tim:
I also live in So. Cal. and am expecting the tree huggers any time. The best way I have found is to roll into the throttle until between 10# and 15# of boost and then go for it.

I can smokum out on the freeway if the turbo isn't spooled up but if I let the turbo spool first only grey smoke and I can see what is behind me in the mirror ;D

Set your timming at 15.5* or 16* to help cut EGT temps and smoke. Adjust the preload on the AFC diaphram to "0" preload when you install the 3,000 GSK kit.
