Tuning a 24v

How do you go about tuning a 24v once you've done twins and head/cam, and various other stuff? Do you have a custom tune done to your fueling box? Or do you tune the computer itself like on a gasser? I know on the 12v's you can do timing and play with the injection pump, but on the 24v, it's all electronic. Thanks for the help yall.

not much "tuning" can be done on a 24V. Cummins sued to keep people from getting messing with the ECM. Plug in boxes aren't really tunable.

The only way you could really tune a 24V is if you had the proprietary software that the box makers use to program their boxes and could manipulate it on a laptop and reflash the box.

Thanks Pourin, I think.

HOHN, what I meant with the boxes is could you tell Edge or TST or whoever what you have, and where you want the power to come in, and stuff like that, and could they do a kind of custom program for that? Or is just plug and play?

I don't think that this is useful information, but I do know that Borsch can come to a location and reprogram the chip in the VP44.

If it involves tuning, it's viable info. I'm really curious because I'm starting to wonder that if you could custom tune the fueling box, or even the ECM, on a 24v if there's even more power to be had from them. Maybe this is the gasser side in me but I think that we're leaving power on the table by not being able to tune everything to work as one. A TST box doesn't know that you have a ported head and cam to flow more air. If it did, you could possibly add in some more fuel and make even more power. What about where it starts adding the fuel in? How bout timing advance?

The boxes are setup to run the maximum safe duty cycle of the VP44 injection pump. Thats why there is no boxes over the 120 HP mark for our trucks. You would have surpased the duty cycle beyond that and smoke the pumps. There is probably a bit more left that the box can get but the pumps probably can't take it for long or not long enough to risk selling it to the public.

Ok experts, I need to know.... Can the chip from the top of the VP44 be installed on another VP44 with common tools? MIne is doctored, by Cummins, sooner or later the pump will go bad, can I retain the programming? I would hate to lose this power and ( ) smoke...

You can swap the chip form VP to VP I swaped mine so that the wire was not crimp and had it warranted. The tool need are some trox's and a 17mm wrench. I am working on posting pics of the process.

As for the custom chips. Superchips was going to come out with the software so that their dealers with dyno's could custom tune their Tuners for the 24V. But I don't know if it is still going to happen.

Thanks for the response. I had the cover off this one but did not go further as in my 63 years I have learned not to mess with something you don't know unless you have either a manual or information on it. Great, that means I can keep the same programming which is ideal for my uses.
