CR 24v doesn't sound as good as the vp44 24v????

Why do the newer rigs sound so much more muffled than the vp trucks, and I have looked up on youtube for straight pipe clips, and they still sound muffled. I just had to sell my 01 that I loved so the wife could go to nursing school, sucks very badly. But I am thnkin I want another cummins when she gets done with school, love the newer body style but you just cant beat the grunt of the older trucks, they just sound so dang mean. What are your guys thoughts, and if I change the turbo on a 2nd gen 24v over to the 3rd gen turbo will it make it sound different??

The 3rd Gen 24 Valves are Common Rail Injection system, completely different than the VP44 styled system on the 2nd Gen 24 Valves. Mostly due to Injection pump, Injection spray pattern, length of fuel being injected, psi at which fuel is being injected, that sorta stuff for the newer engines being less noisy.

The extra injection events quiet down the CR.

The exhaust manifold seems to change the tone as well.

I seem to remember people putting a 2nd gen manifold on a 3rd gen and the exhaust note at least sounded a lot more like a 2nd gen. Won't change the engine noise though.

^^^ Only the new ones have the Emissions stuff on them, Obviously the 6.7's but there may be a couple years that the 5.9 had it as well (like 07.5 and up)

So if I got the CR and put a 2nd gen manifold on her it would sound more like a 2nd gen. My truck had a straight pipe 5" system and I loved the sound when I would mat it down and go it sounded like a nasty semi roaring down the road lol.

Like Madhat said its becouse of the extra injection events. On a 24v all the fuel is injected at once which causes a sudden increase in presure which causes the rattle we know and love. But the 3rd gens inject the fuel in more than one injection which causes the pressure to build not as quickly, equalling less rattle. Thats the best I can explain it anyways.

If you want the old 24v sound you have to put swap exhaust manifolds for one from a 98-02 truck. That will give you the sound you are looking for.

Yeah I completely understand on the knocking noise under the hood, the newer trucks are made to not knock so loud, but I was interested in why the newer truck's exhaust sound is not as loud. Thanks for the info SMOKER preciate it and everyone esle thakns for the info too. Now can you explain what is it about the new CR manifold that makes it sound like it still has a muffler on it. I did love the clackity clack under the hood but absolutely loved how loud it was when you give the skinny pedal.

Ok I looked at the newer manifolds on eaby and I can tell why they sound different, so if I change the manifold to a old style then do I also have to change the air cleaner and downpipe?

I agree, the cr's sound more like a honda, all loud and obnoxious. I don't understand though how the manifold is going to change the sound of a completely different firing engine.

Also, if you put a different cam in them they can start to sound more like a 12valve then anything!
