So do the old commercial 12v's with the 3rd gen style low mount manifold sound like a CR?

I asked a few of the guys in the 3rd gen forums and they siad there is alot of guys that do that to their trucks to make them sound more like 2nd gen trucks. If you look at the manifolds for 03 and up the turbo mount is way back by the 5th cylinder, where as you know the 2nd gen is directly in the middle and makes it flow way smoother, the 3rd gen manifolds flow worse and makes them have that raspy exhaust note. One guy posted a sound clip and you can listen to it and it sounds way better with the different manifold, has a much deeper note just not as much engine rattle. Sounded really good, you just have to change the manifold and mod the downpipe and intake pipe and etc....

idk about anyone else but ive heard some loud 3rd gens. Their idle sound/exhaust note is not much but when there strait piped and the rpms get up there, they can be perdy dern loud in their own way.

lol, the fuel knock is louder than wide open on these trucks. its ridiculous, and the common rails may not sound as good...but they have alot more grunt, i think they are like 300 hp

This guy is running a manifold that is similar to the 3rd gen manifold. It locates the turbo between cyl 4 and 5. One of my favorite videos and conversions!

Here is a 2nd gen manifold on a 3rd gen. This is member levigarrett76's truck.

I loved the sound of my 24v 2nd gen...that motor home sounds pretty sweet.

The other vid of the 3rd gen...it still doesnt have that same sound that the 2nd gens did. I wish i could get my 12v to sound like the 24v did

thanks dave, so swapping manifolds does change sound. hmmm, im going to try that. it seems like switching to a manifold that brings the turbo down kind of like the 3rd gen makes the exhaust note deeper

I doubt that changing your exhaust manifold on the CR engine to 2nd gen manifold will make it sound like a VP truck. I've run three-four different styles of exhaust manifolds on my ride, it really didn't change the tone on the exhaust to much. I even drove my truck around for awhile with no exhaust, just used a 3ft 5in quick dump off my last set of twins.

Its more to do with the injection pump and the camshaft. I changed the cam in my truck and it changed the idle sound to that of a 12v. IMO, just put on a P7100 pump and you'll get the 12v clanky noise. Sorry that VP sound is exclussive for us 2nd gen 98.5-02 CTD trucks.
