high egts with BHAF

I just pulled out my stock air box with drop-in K&N filter and replaced with a BHAF filter from Carquest. my problem is now my egts climb like crazy when I have my foot in it. even at a lower rpm they seem to climb really fast, it reaches 10-11 much faster than with the stock setup, I have stock exhaust on a 98 12v 5sp 215. One thing that I did notice is how fast it drops after I let of the pedal, is this normal?

Sounds like a boost leak.

BHAF should SLOW the rate of EGT rise, not speed it up.

The BHAF wouldn't have caused a boost leak though???

Doesn't explain why the Higher EGT's with A BHAF as compared to a stock setup..

Could be coincidental that the boost leak started the same time as the BHAF install I guess.

True. I've noticed that I tend to "disturb" things a little bit under the hood when I'm making "improvements".

It's also possible that there is some clear packaging left on the BHAF that needs to be peeled off.

Just check the little stuff. My BHAF dropped about 150° in my case.

I remember someone testing their intake air temperature and finding a BHAF had 25% higher temp than a stock air box, on a stock truck. Believe this was done at the airhorn, if memory serves. This could raise EGT's....no idea how much??? Would not, I think, explain rapid decrease??

my truck is not stock, yes I removed the plastic cellophane wrapper. after driving it some it seems to rise fast but also drops faster than the k&n setup when I come off the throttle. boost leak? I didn't change anything but remove the stock box and put on the BHAF to the stock intake. have not put on a heat shield yet. also noticed that I doesn't really seem to reach past 1100 for short bursts in 5th around 65-70 does this make any sense?

i think you hear the turbo now more so ur pushing the pedal alot more cause ur getting hooked so your egt's rise....its like when i put up the stacks i cant get my foot off it most of the time cause i have " diesel withdrawal" issues ...try and drive like before for 30 min and compare egts to what they used to be given the same habits they should be lower definitely

Imagine it's somewhat warm in Arizona now, my bet is your underhood temp is at least 100° warmer than the outside air you were sucking before with the stock box.

i don't know.... when i put my bhaf on, my egt's went up about +- 100*. that's with a heatshield as well. it seemed to get better with age though. kind of like the filter had to be "broken in", or something.

It sounds like Terror is up in the White Mountains of Arizona. If that is the case, it's anything but warm. He probably lives at 7000-9000 feet elevation and probably has a couple of feet of snow beside his driveway.
