EGTs... how high is too high?

Well, I'm shopping for some gauges so I can grind my fuel plate to a "0". I just want to know for after I do that, at what temp should I let off the throttle? Is 1400 in the danger zone, or can I safely go higher than that?

1400 is good for about 5 seconds IMHO... When towing I pull out of the fuel around 1250-1300 for sustained long power pulls. Short bursts are OK at the 1400 range, but you take your life in your hands with head gaskets, and other items taking that heat. Scoring up the cylinders with some gooey pistons is not good for the pocketbook either..

i see 1600 if i try, and have for a couple of seconds at a time. i have 174000 miles. im not saying its right but its doable for short bursts. if i understand right its the sustained temps that will hurt you. seeing 1400 or even 1600 for short periods of time will not (immediately) hurt you in my opinion.

Its not how hot is too hot, but how long is too long. They will handle a LOT of heat for a short period of time. Im not fueled real heavy, but she will sit on the needle at 1500* running it hard all the way through 3rd gear.

It doesn't take long for a piston skirt to expand far enough to make contact with a liner. I think of that when temps start exceeding 1250.

I see 1800-1850* VERY regulary on my 97. Towing up hills I have been running 1500- 1600* for 2-3 minutes before I get to the top of the hill. Im tited of backing out of it so I just hold it there. Its been this way since Febuary. Put a big turbo in and now it runs hotter by about 80* towing. Sled pullin I see 1800*at the end of the track every time.
