Which aftermarket muffler?

I want to use the existing stock piping and put an aftermarket muffler in place of the stock one. What is a good muffler that will give me a little louder sound with less restriction? I would like to do the install myself. Ok to just use clamps or should I just take it to a muffler shop and have them install it? I am not planning on upping the horsepower any time soon because I can't afford a new tranny so I don't think a whole new system would be neccesary. What do you all think?

the advantage to doing it yourself, other than its pretty easy, is that before you go out and buy a muffler, check to see if you like the way it sounds without one. alot of people seem to be satisifed with removing theirs but leaving the resonator on. gives you a more aggressive sounds but it aint obnoxiously loud. just my $0.02. good luck with it.

Straight pipe it! Turbo to tail! 4"! Stainless steel!

Okay, all a matter of personal preference really. I like my set-up very well. From what I have found, you may want to go ahead and lay down the cash up front for a system that meets your long term needs and desires, as it will save the $$$'s in the long run.

Rip Rook is a good man to call and discuss what you want. Very reputable. Sorry, I don't have his info handy, but I am sure others will chime in.

Dynomax 4" bullet style race muffler, less than $40. Quiets but doesn't silence...

Thanks for all the replies. I'm leaning toward taking the muffler off and puting a straight pipe in its place and see if that's too load. If it is, then I will put a straight through muffler in.

Does anybody know if a muffler with 4" inlet and outlet or a 4" straight pipe will replace the stock muffler? What I am trying to say is what is the size of the stock inlet and outlet of the stock muffler? Thanks in advance. Mark

Mark, I put a glass pack on mine after running a straight pipe for a while. I didn't like the drone. I liked the sound though. After installing the muffler, my egt DROPPED about 75 degrees. And it still sounds good (to me). My muffler has a 3" inlet and a 3" outlet. Check my sig for what I have. I don't remember the price but i got it from JC Whitney.

Aero-Turbine

Here's one that not many CTD guys are using, yet. These mufflers kick butt and sound sweet. Price is right also. http://www.aero-turbine.com/

Follow links on the website and see the results and comments folks are making with these on a Cummins.
