BHAF or K&N Drop in?

Been calling around (Napa, O'Reilly's) and nobody yet has the BHAF in stock. Prices seem to be around $55 though at both places if I order one.

Local Advance Auto parts store has the K&N in stock, I think $78 or so.

Point blank: which one flows better, and is it worth waiting a day for the BHAF to be ordered or just go ahead and pick up the drop-in K&N?

Thanks

wait for the BHAF. the K&N is the subject of alot of debate. apparently it does not filter as well and some people find oil residue in the turbo. i have one but personally havent noticed any oil residue. about the only thing the K&N seems to do well is all is allow you to hear the turbo more (not as much as you will with the BHAF).

there are also other kinds drop-ins other than the K&N you could consider, AFE comes to mind.

just my .02 cents

As far as filtering go the K&N is fine, many diesel guys say it is a good filter as well as K&N itself they even offer a mail out test sheet to their customers. I run my drop in, in a stock airbox that has large holes cut unto the bottom of the box to help alow more air rather than sucking all the air from the fender, works well for me. Just don't check the filter all the time and make sure you properly grease the seal when installing. I would consider an AFE also, I don't like the fact that with a BHAF you have to continue to buy them all the time.

Look for a Baldwin 2820. I'm buying them at a big-rig parts shop for $28 each.

i have the k/n with no problems to report. im thinking of switching out to the BHAF though just because it gives you even more turbo noise............am i correct on this guys ??? is there a significant increase in turbo noise to be worth the change ?? later, scott

Whats more important - turbo noise or maximum filteration??? I would think max. filtration would be higher on the list that turbo spool. If you want niose take your silencer ring out.

After much, reading on this topic I believe that the BHAF, AFE megacannon with Proguard 7 filter or a ScottyII (which also uses an AFE filter) are the best options. Ditch the stock airbox, it doesnt seal well. I have heard many confliction reports on the K&N - I believe the new AFE has better construction and is worth the few extra bucks...

I have run a K&N drop in for other vehicles in the past - to be honest the cleaning and oiling were a PITA and less than fun. That right there leads me to pass on putting one in this truck.

I could care less about turbo whine, or any other superficial stuff like that... I bought this truck to pull, and I want performance and durability - period.

Looks like I should order that BHAF tomorrow from the local parts store... thanks!

DRM,

The BHAF is a much better choice than the K&N - thye just let in too much debris, especially in a dusty environment.

Do yourself a favor and get an Outerwares prefilter....will make your BHAF last much longer and keeps it dry in a downpour......

It's not the K&N that filters poorly its the job that most guys do when installing the filter. I run in dusty areas and have run the filter for 40,000 km and there is no dust or dirt in air intake or turb fins.

You may want to check inside your intercooler. Reason being... I thought my K&N was doing great until I looked in all of my intercooler boots and the intercooler itself. There was much oil and quite a bit of dust laid down in there. Now I may not have been perfect when cleaning and oiling my filter but I was pretty darn carefull when doing so and if it requires more perfection than I was providing, personally, I dont want to have to deal with it. I now have a Scotty II that sucks COOOOOoooOOoooOL air with no oily residue or dust .
Just my $1.02,
Scott

Over 200k on a drop in K&N, serviced three times total. Inside of the intake tubes passes the white rag test or I wouldn't be using it. Filter minder has never moved, that indicates to me that the engine has been getting all the air it can use.

Mechanic friend at Cummins cringes at the sight of a BHAF, he's come across more than one that that has partually separated from the tube allowing unfiltered air into the engine.
This can be prevented with a ridged collar but watch out otherwise.
