muffler shop said no to removing muffler

I went to the local muf shop today. Told the dood that I wanted to remove muf and place a straight pipe. He said he would not do it because he would be cheating me out of my hard earned money. He told me the factor muffler is as "freeflowing" as money can buy and the resonator is there to prevent a drone noise while the motor is under driveline pressure (driving/pulling I suppose). He said to go somewhere else if I wanted to waste my money that he would not do it. However, he said he would sell me a "chip" and that would make it (my truck) "bad ***".

The stock muffler is about as free flowing as Carrot Top's hair.

Re:muffler shop said no to removing muffler

I took my removed stock muffler, held it up to the light, and saw nothing but neverending darkness.

Saw a cutout of one, and no way can it be "free flowing"

Flowmasters or Dynomax's on the other hand (some anyway) you can see right through them.
Think Glasspacks or Cherrybomb mufflers from way back(?)

The shop I took mine to didn't say no, just that it was a strange request, first time they heard of it.
Ended up paying more than it should have been, they took 2 hours to do it .

Re:muffler shop said no to removing muffler

I would take the guys advice and take it someplace else.... I got a big drop in EGT's when I took my muffler off, along with that nice cummins sound. Or you could just buy a piece of pipe for 10 dollars, have the ends expanded and do it yourself. My exhaust cost me a grand total of..... $23.00

Straight piping my truck was the best $40 I ever spent. I grin like a maniac every time I get on the gas. ;D

wannadiesel: If you get on the "gas" in your truck, I'm surprised it still runs. ;D (usually that unleaded doesn't work to well in our trucks)

Re:muffler shop said no to removing muffler

couple of years ago, when I straight piped my '97, I went to several muffler shops before finding one that would make me a pipe. They wouldn't do it because I was removing the muffler - guess they thought they could get in some kind of trouble for it....even though I was going to install it myself !! was kind of frustrating. Finally hooked up with a local mom-pop place that had no problem doing it. Really reduced turbo lag, coold down the EGT and sounded great...planning on straight piping the '03 in the next couple of weeks ;D think i'm going to step up to a 4" system this time though.

Save yourself the money and just take a sawzall to it. It'll give you the same benefit plus you'll get a nice, clean, dumped look. ;D

Re:muffler shop said no to removing muffler

I ran into the same problems. Where ever I went or called they looked at me like I was crazy! I've so far heard that, you dont want to do that because its to loud, that will decrease power, those Cummins dont sound good without a muffler, and the best one is hey just go 4''! No kidding bud, you think you could lend me the $500-$600 bucks everyone is asking! I can get a setup on the Net for around $400. Didnt these guys ever hear of the Internet? They must think we are all ignorant guys that just like really loud trucks. I had to explain to one muffler guy about EGT's. I want to go totaly straight piped (no muffler now) but really I'm scared of two things. The dreaded DRONE and most of all the guy working on it. Has everyone thats gone straight piped get the drone?

Re:muffler shop said no to removing muffler

Our local muffler shop told me that I had to leave it on there because the motor needs a certain amount of back pressure to perform properly. I said "Hello ... it's a diesel. Back pressure is bad ju-ju".

I took the sawzall to it and had a piece of big exhaust pipe in the shop already. Total cost: NADA DURN THING !!

PISTOL
