How Long Should Brakes and Shocks Last??

At 82,600 miles, my truck still has the original brakes and shocks on it. I suspect that both are probably nearing the end of their effective life span. Generally speaking, how long should brake pads and shocks last on a truck that never hauls or pulls anything?

I'm going to check them tomorrow when I have the tires rotated, but I was just curious about the mileage that others see from these two items.

It all depends on how you drive. I would say that is pretty good.

The front brakes are most likely worn out but the rears should be OK, since you don’t tow. The shocks should be replaced you will be surprised just how worn the shocks are, but you will not notice until you change them.

I have been watching my brakes closely. At 95,000 miles the rears are thin and I already have the replacement pads. As soon as the weather is good they will go in. The fronts are still at about 1/2 or better. I bought the stock replacement pads from the dealer because these are the best brakes I've ever had on any vehicle and they have lasted for a long time. The disks have not warped either and I've had them smoking in the mountains while towing.

My shocks came off right away. Get that done and you'll love it. Much better handling and the wheels actually stay on the ground more of the time, like on bumpy turns. Ranchos on the rear (for towing and variable loads, I love mine on the stiffest setting when towing but I want a smooth ride and some suspension travel when empty) and Bilsteins on the front (they are soft around town but get more aggresive when worked hard, in othe words, velocity sensitive).

i replaced the stock shocks with bilsteins at 30,000 and have been really happy.i just turned 80,000 on the stock pads and when i had my tires rotated
last weekend they still had about 25,000 on them.thats with moderate towing.

My brakes started squeaking at 80K, you should hear them now at 110K.
Original shocks too.

I hardly ever use the brakes. They just slow you down.

Hard call on the shocks. If you ask a dealer while they are under warranty they will tell you if they are not leaking they are ok.
Ask them the day after your warranty is gone and you most likley will be in need of new ones

My stock shocks were replaced as soon as i went on a long road trip and got out crippled!!

Stock shocks are JUNK. They're too stiff with no rebound dampning!

Best bet is replace them with aftermarket long before 82k miles. Your butt will thank you!
