2003 high output diesel excessive cranking time when hot, sometimes willnot start any suggestions?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Injector Pumps, might be something else but unlikely.

 

Forgot to mention if you need to start it when it's hot pour some water over the pump to cool it down and it may take right off. I got a few hundred miles more out of mine by carrying a cooler with water bottles in the back seat while I waited for my new pump to show up.

 

Shouldnt be the injection pump. If it was a 98.5 to 2002, then maybe. If you get smoke from the exhaust after a long crank time then i would lean more towards an injector leaking , causing the pump to crank longer before it can make enough pressure .

 

You really need to monitor the rail psi with a scan tool and perform the fuel delivery tests.

 

As said above , should have it scanned with a drbIII (dealers have them and some private shops have them) I had mine scanned at a private shop. Does your truck surge, any smoke.

 

no smoke or surge, sounds like i have a similiar truck to yours with a service body

 

Do you use a fuel additive?
Have you changed fuel filter?
Have you done the key trick to see if any codes come up(turn the key on and then off , do this three times without starting and if there are any codes they will be displayed in the odometer)
Get it scanned (check fuel pressures, I dont think it is high pressure side but the low pressure side (lift pump) just my 2 cents.
