longer crank times when hot

longer crank times when hot

my s/o 2003 starts great when cold seems short crank time like 2- 3 seconds ,once hot like yesterday, I drove straight from florida to ny, I stopped to fill up in NJ went to start and cranked about 7-8 seconds before starting ,is this normal, or the start of something. truck has 61000 miles and ran great got 20 mpg drove like allways,just notice the longer crank time once truck was ran .thanks kully

Longer hot engine crank times are one symptom of a failing injection rail pressure relief valve. Check with your dealer, there should be a TSB on just this issue.

I wouldn't worry about it much. I've experienced the same thing when restarting the truck after bathroom stops on long trips. I think it has a bit more to do with the fact that the engine and fuel system have been working really hard for an extended length of time and it's just a bit harder for everything to start back up after that. I've never had any permanent or lasting problems secondary to this phenomenon.

With that having been said, I'd install a fuel pressure gauge anyway so that you can keep an eye on the fuel system. Also, wouldn't hurt to check for codes when this happens (afterward). Hope that helps.

Uh no....if the truck only has 61 k on it, and there is a TSB - the dealer should be taking care of it. Ive never experienced that in either of my CTD's.

Not normal to have long crank times, take it in to get looked at.
