The royal purple I use always makes the truck smell kinda like gear oil. When it comes time or close enough time to change it usually has subsided by then.

Thanks for the heads up, Bill. Especially since it is turning colder here. I eyeballed it and I should have no problems. The hose makes a smooth arc up and over the engine, then it's downhill the rest of the way.

Hopefully someone can comment.

I have two identical trucks and what I can't understand is that my auto truck will stink constantly and also blow out blue oily smoke when taking off from being stopped, not running down the highway. I can pull the dipstick after a oil change and that new rotella will be totally black and smell horrible, I don't know if it smells like fuel or sulfur.

My 5sp truck on the other hand has only lately developed this smell and only the first couple hundred mi. after the oil change. My trucks oil even after 3k mi will still not be black and the oil on the stick does not stink.

What gives?

I adapted a clear water bottle to my auto's blow by tube and it will catch about an oz of oil in 1000 mi. Could the oil smoke be caused by valve seals?

I saw infidel posting here and he has given me a lot of good advise before.

Thank you all in advance.

I can't comment on the smell except I don't remember smelling any odor and I have been running VPB since new. Maybe it doesnt' smell and maybe my nose doesn't work any better than my ears. Huh, what'd you say?

Chad, looking at your trucks I would say it is the fact that the one with the auto is a California truck. They have always had more emissions stuff than the majority of the rest of the country.

The black oil right after an oil change is common on most of the 3rd gen starting with the 04.5 models. This again falls back to the California truck as the 04.5 and newer models are 50 state emissions legal.

It sounds like the auto truck has a lot of blowby. It's probably got a scuffed cylinder or two, but as long as it runs good and doesn't use too much oil for your liking there's no need to do anything about it.
