Stinky Oil Question

I used Rotella for my first 50000 miles or so and did not like the stink it put out. I switched to Delo two oil changes ago and no more stinky oil smell so i thought. The Delo i put in my truck last smells just like the Rotella, what gives? The first time i used Delo i think it was CI-4(no bad smell) and this last batch is CJ-4 rated. Now the stinky sulfur smell is back. Is the CJ-4 or an additive that causes the stinky smell?

What you are smelling is a wax like additive that keeps other additives in suspension burning off.

Is this something relatively new because my first two oil changes with Delo did not have this smell?

I've always had some burn off smell from Delo but nothing like Rotella. Haven't used any CJ oil yet though.
Could be there has been a change or maybe the seal at the rear of your hood has come off and you're just smelling it more.

Got to have something to do with the CJ-4. The first oil changes were with CI-4 Delo and no smell.

It was normally considered normal to have the smell after an oil change. After I moved my breather bottle, the smell dropped considerably.

I used some ¾" ID rubber hose, about 6 feet long. I pulled the stock tube and bottle and ran the new hose. The new hose goes up from the vent, over the top of the engine (on the intake side of the valve cover), runs along with the tranny lines, and the hose ends at the tranny crossmember where the bottle sits at the end. It works well, only thing is, I used black rubber hose that is normally only used for coolant. It slowly decays from the warm oil vapors from the engine.

J.R., be careful if your blowby tube runs uphill in freezing weather. Condensation will collect in the low points and freeze eventually plugging up the blowby which can cause blown seals or gaskets in your engine.

I have my catch can mounted further back, on the transfer case cross member, and it has not done much for the smell at all. Oh well. I am switching to Valvoline Premium Blue on the next oil change, so hopefully the smell will be gone soon. I have heard others say that Delo does not smell at all, but I already had the VPB. Thanks for the explanation jr. Maybe it will inspire some others.

got to love rosmella, amsoil stinks too, but only for about 1000 miles.

I actually like the smell, it lets me know i have a real truck.

I even dab a little on me before the wife and I go out for a night on the town.

The seal for the good slipped off on one side of mine and man did it stink. I use Castrol and it doesnt stink that bad at all. Only last 600 miles tops and goes away. It smells a heck of alot better than rotella!!

My wife thinks I'm crazy but I love the smell of a fresh Rotella oil change. (Just did mine this weekend)
