I used the gm alternator that came in my sonoma. I had to machine the pulley from the original 60 amp alternator to fit
the gm one and make a new top tensioning bracket.

As for the industrial vs automotive fuel pump the 3.3 is an industrial engine and i like how it controls torque. It is almost like having cruise control with your foot. I recently drove my truck through kentucky which has quite a few hills on the interstate. I could set my speed with my right foot and not slow down climbing a hill the governor would increase fueling to maintain speed.

Macet, I have an electric vacuum pump from a ford truck, but am not sure how to use this one. Can I maybe see a couple pictures of your electric pump setup, and a small explanation?

To better answer your question, I run engine dynos all day, so I have an external tank with a flow meter on it. They are small enough that you could fit it onto a vehicle application, but would be more expensive than I would want to put on my vehicle I think.

Hey 95z28a4 ,

Have not seen any posts from you in a while , how is your build going ???

My son purchased a 1990 wrangler with a 4bt and when compared to my Mercedes..... it whoooped it, hands down !!!! Anyways I could not get over my desire for more power and more torque than my Mercedes 3L made and I stumbled upon a QSB 4.5 for $4000 ( almost half of what they cost last year when I was looking ) . Well , I could not pass it up so it should be delivered on friday and I will post pictures then. I have already yanked the Mercedes out in anticipation !!!

95z28a4, any luck on the wiring harness you started on ?? How difficult was it ??

There was some talk on here awhile back about going to a lighter flywheel. Considering the torque pulses on a 4 cylinder engine I would be curious to hear from anyone who went to a lighter flywheel.

http://www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine...on_engines.htm

This link came from CATCRD during a discussion I was having on lostkjs regarding the "shudder' in the torque converter on the liberty CRD's. It's a very interesting look at different engine configs and how dramatically different instantaneous torque output really is. I'm not sure having a light flywheel on a 4 banger diesel is a healthy choice on the driveline as it would provide less dampening to those pulses.

I'm here. Other than finally purchasing a Jeep ZJ for the conversion, I haven't done much. I have been working 6 days a week 12 - 14 hours / day. I'm making plenty money, but I have little time. I'm hoping things will slow down a little at work in the latter part of May.....at least for a couple months. We have another turnaround scheduled for the beginning of August. Of course, many people take vacations during the summer months creating more overtime. It's a vicious cycle.

The Jeep I purchased is a 1994 Grand Cherokee Limited with 101k miles owned by a wealthy elderly couple in South Carolina. I found it on www.cars.com . I picked it up during one of my trips to Tennessee. I also decided on and purchased a lift for the ZJ. I bought a Rubicon Express 3.5" Superride kit with front and rear adjustable lower control arms for a good price from www.4x4groupbuy.com . If I find 3.5" lift is too much, I can cut the coils to lower it some.

I have the wiring harness mostly sorted out in my head. I have learned that I need a Deutsch crimper for the connectors. It's about $275 new. I was looking for used one on eBay. I need to get back searching. Thanks for the reminder.

Sounds like an great candidate for your swap !!

I have purchased from 4x4groupbuy before ( a JK Rubicon Dana 44 front axle ) they are a great bunch of people !!

The company I bought the QSB 4.5 from mentioned a couple of companies that make harnesses (one in Ark. and one in Arizona , and if I have any luck , I will share everything here !!

I have noticed everyone has mentioned their engine was a SAE 4 and it seems mine is a SAE 3. I will find out today when I unwrap it !! I just found that out of place to be the only oddball out !!!

I have the exact opposite problem as you considering work !! My back gave out and I have had 2 back surgeries in 13 months and am permanately disabled ( my left leg is 60% paralyzed from the knee down ) ; but I had an orthotic brace made to assist in mobility !! I still have 6 rental properties; but I can no longer haul oilfield equipment !!!

red_smoke,

I'd be interested in hearing more details about your engine rebuild. I remember reading somewhere that rebuild parts were hard to find. Did you have to bore the block? Standard pistons? etc..

Thank you TDIwyse and 95z28a4 and everyone for all the awesome information !!

I am so stoked to start adding my contributions to helping others !! SO, here we go !!
Got the QSB 4.5L today !! It has 2 sets of info on the "DATA PLATE" ....one says it is a 239 ci , 3.9 and on another line of the same plate says it is a 4.5L displacement !!??? It also says (around the 3.9 area ) it says it is 100 horse @ 2000 rpm and on another it says ( around the 4.5L area ) it says it is 110 horsepower !!!!??? So , I am confused !! I called Cummins Mid-South and gave them the CPL and they said its MFG date is 12-5-2005 and it is DEFINATELY a 4.5L and 100 horse I tried to take pictures of the DATA PLATE and all 3 came out blurry !! BUT , I will post pics of the ones that did come out clear !! Will have to post a link to my flickr pics there are 4 or 5 of the motor !!

ENJOY !!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42246689@N06/

Called JIM @ PC and gave him the dimensions of my bellhousing ( it is an SAE #3) and the industrial flywheel ( it has two possible mounting areas ) and went the smaller of the two. The flywheel is inset 2 1/8 inches from surface of the bell using the smaller mounting area !! So, with the SAE #3 adapter to Chrysler 727 adapter it will connect to my Dakota 3.9 bellhousing !! Total cost $290 +$190 and the engine is connected to the trans ; I am gonna buy the O'reilly Auto parts pilot bearing that 95z28a4 did not like ( only because I looked at it and it is an all metal piece ) for $10.99 ! I am going new for the Flywheel here is the link :: (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...T/8_Cyl_5-dot-) and I like 95z28a4's LUK clutch ( http://www.dial-a-clutch.com/Clutch_Kit_p/6977.htm) !!

So , what do ya'll that have already done this swap think so far ???

You are welcome, but Macet deserves the credit for the Dakota bellhousing idea.

Sorry !! The flywheel link did not work and the forum won't let me edit my post . SO, here is the link if anyone is interested !! It is only $79.00 and free shipping for a NEW flywheel .......http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...%26+Drivetrain

Don't remember if any one has already linked to this site ... but it could be handy for those considering this swap it is full of info on bellhousings that adapt to other engines !! http://www.jeeps-offroad.com/f41/eng...housings-4740/

Hey Macet , ESN ::: 46559452 and CPL # 8754

Can you shoot me the QSB4.5L wiring diagram for computer ( harlow.hutchinson@***.net ) and does a pigtail for the computer (for me to send signals to gauges and such ) exist ?? And, does a gear driven power steering pump exist ??? My engine runs accessories off the back NOT the front of the motor ( but , you prolly already knew that ) !! When reading the "pins" for the computer; I am assuming they are read like a book " from the top .. left to right" BUT , is that in orientation to standing at the pulleys or at the bellhousing ( front or back ) of the engine ??

UPDATE !!
I have received the PC adapter set and the Stainless Steel Brakes vacuum pump and I went with a Sprinter Van Intercooler ( it is gonna take some modifying , but so does the entire JEEP for this conversion ) !! I have updated my flickr account !!

Was also wondering what Torque value everyone used to attach the Pheonix flywheel to the SAE flywheel and the Dakota flywheel to the Pheonix flywheel adapter ?????

Thanks

Torque values depend on fastener size and grade. The QSB3.3 flywheel housing uses metric fasteners. I googled bolt torque and found several charts. Just an FYI, I used 2 packs of ARP 230-7303 to attach the Dodge flywheel to the PC adapter. These are 12 point bolts that are 7/16-20 x 1.25".
