They did do a few heat cycles on the head gasket. Did a few burger runs. I remember do a few hard pulls on a new head gasket prior to hooking up my RV last year. I don't know about babyin the truck for troubleshooting. I like Kev's go hard attitude. Thats why records get broke.

Joe despite what you see here, these engines are very tough. My engine is (was) still the stock engine that came with the truck in 2003. What we did do this year was get the head rebuilt and o-ringed. We did get 2 retorks done on it before the races in Edmonton. But then we had some fueling problem which dogged me right till the end of this engines life, (LOL) The amazing thing, and a testament to how tought these engines are, this engine was still running at the end of the track I had to actually shut the engine off, and that was with the rod hanging outside of the block.

That is strange that they are having failure issues. There are a number of vehicles that came from the factory with electric water pumps. Most of the aftermarket pumps are rated at like 3000hrs+ pump life. If I were running an electric water pump, I would take the stock water pump off, cut off all of the fins, and then bolt it back on. No custom belt or custom idler necessary.

The electric water pumps out there bolt in the OEM location on the block. They are not a remote mounted pump.

Well if those are the ones having issues, maybe a remote mount is the way to go? I personally have only used sbc direct fit electric water pumps and remote mount water pumps, so I can't say too much about the cummins direct fit pump issues at hand.

Kevin,

Same thing when I threw a rod. It was still running with a 6" hole in the side. I had to turn the ignition off!!

LOL,, thats crazy! I was racing a car that was running a 9.90, he red lit, but I had about a second head start on him (bracket racing,, I didnt have a clue where to dial in with all the troubles I was having) and until the engine went I was pulling on him,, by the time the motor went I had a 3 second wait till he went past.. guy come up to me after and asked me why I was sandbagging so bad on my dial in... he had never seen a truck pull on him before...

Greg, what rods and pistons did you put in your new motor? And did you put in a girdle?

That was the Cummins. You can hear the injector hang open and it hydrolocking when I hit the throttle. I'll have to dig up the graph from that run but it was well over 800 when the rod finally had enough.

Here is the run right before that.

Kevin,

The engine I built after that has QSB 480 pistons and 12V forged rods. You need to use J-jet oilers (same as 05-07 blocks) with the QSB's. Thank God I used the 12V rods because when I just recently had an injector hang on me again, the rod only bent instead of breaking like the PMR's do saving the block.

No girdle, just the stock block stiffener. Personaly, I think that is fine. I just disassembled my engine and had no cap walk at all and the only real reason for a girdle is to prevent walk.

A friend of mine had a blown big block 'Vette that he ran the 1/4 mile with. It was a 10 second, 4000 pound car. He was the mechanic and I was the grunt work, a little of what he passed on to me has actually stuck after 20+ years. Wow, was it that long ago? Holy crap. I remember the tranny swaps that finnished at 4 am, and there is a sick part of me that wants to get involved with that again. I know it's not in my budget though, so if there is any need for some not too bright, heavy lifting kinda help - let me know.

My schedule needs to settle down a bit to get involved seriously, but I would love to learn while playing. If you guys are working in Calgary, let me know by PM if I can get involved, and help out the odd time please. Thanks.
