Dodge fixed the overhead mileage display!

Hi all,

Wife and I are currently driving our new '06 home to AL from Idaho. When you hit reset for the mileage, it starts moving immediately toward whatever the new figure will be, instead of taking 6000 years to do so like the early 06's. Any of you who have earlier 06's know what I mean-the display basically does not start changing for a while after you hit reset.

I have an earlier 6 spd '06, and that's one thing that immediately jumped out at me about it compared to the 04.5's I have owned, and my wife's '05 hemi.

Apparently, they make the newer ones give the old average much less weight after you reset it, so the figure can change much more quickly.

The slow-to-update display was one minor but annoying change I had noticed between the 04.5's I used to have and my early '06-I'm glad they fixed that during the same model year.

I dont know if its the same but my 05 wouldnt reset the DTE everytime I would fill up. My truck was in for some injector work and they ordered a new display for me. I will get it on Tuesday.

No, this was a programming change they made-not a parts fix. Every early '06 I've ever seen had the annoying "feature" of basically not resetting the mileage when you pushed the button. What it did was keep the last mileage value displayed when you pushed the reset button, and assign it so much weight that the display wouldn't react reasonably fast to actual changes in mileage. In the 05's and before, it would completely disregard the old value (essentially assigning it 0 weight) and start calculating anew right from when you hit the button. The display in my later '06 seems to act like a compromise between the two extremes, but is much closer to the '05 and earlier than the early '06. This is much improved, in my opinion.

Seems to me when you hit the reset button, you want to erase the old and start new. Hence the term RESET!

That is true. Unfortunately, starting in the early '06 model year, that was not the case.

I have the "slow reset feature" on my truck (built Oct '05)...do you know if there is a TSB to correct the issue? This is my first Dodge, so I assumed it was normal for all.

Thanks,

John

Assuming you meant your truck was built Oct '05, yes, it is normal. Nothing is "wrong" with your truck per se, it's just poor programming introduced for the '06 model year-programming that has apparently been corrected.

I am not aware of any tsb to update the older '06 trucks to the newer overhead programming. I hope one is released-my early '06 6 speed truck will definitely be getting that update if one is produced.

I wish mine would reset to zero (late 06 model). I want to know mileage for this tank, not the entire time I've been driving the truck with this tank weighted. No wonder the computer calculated MPG numbers are so off from the hand calculated per tank numbers!

Not sure on a TSB, but I know that my brother-in-law is a tech at Dodge and he said that if someone complained about the display they could reprogram it. Might be worth a call to the dealer.
