Overhead mileage display weirdness
Hi all,
I just bought an '06 2500 6 spd to pull fema trailers with. One thing I noticed early on is that the reset button does not seem to really reset the mileage calculation. Pushing it blanks the display for a few seconds, but when the numbers come back up, they are either the same or .1 mpg higher than the previous reading. It gets really ridiculous when you have been going on flat road at a steady speed, then you floor it and push reset at the same time. Here goes the truck, past 80 mph, and it's still getting 18.5 mpg. Right. I talked to someone else who noticed the same thing, so apparently mine is not a fluke. Any insight on this? Once you allow them to stabilize, are the '06 mileage displays reasonably accurate? I know the ones in the two '04.5's I had were pretty accurate.

After resetting mine on my 06. It will come back on the same number it was when it was pushed. But steadily climes till it gets to the avg. mpg. The one thing to keep in mind with the overhead is it pretty much is useless. My temp gage takes forever to reset to the real temp when I pull it out of the garage. What I have found is the overhead ain't very close most of the time.

yeah its kinda weird...It stems from a software mod (I think) Its been discussed here before...Its normal
My overhead has never seen higher than 15.3, and I have hand calced 22 highway
Last tank it read 13.0 and hand figured 16.5 Combo city/highway and I towed around 8K down some country roads..

Dave, your experience with the '04 sounds about like mine with my 04's. Going to 99.9 makes sense coasting downhill-it's probably reading as high as it can in a situation where you're using basically no fuel for the distance you're covering. I don't know if the '06 has had the rate of change damped somewhat, but in any case, pushing the reset button ought to result in a new reading based only off current conditions, not what was current 10 seconds ago. That does not happen, and that's my beef with the new setup. Oh well, unless they release a software update to change it, I guess we're stuck with that "feature."

I think the thing is possessed.
For the most part it's been reading 14.6-8 mpg no matter what I do or how fast/slow I drive. The reset and delay sends me back to the same calc.

What does the owner's manual say? I'm curious if there is some new way to zero out the MPG and have the computer start over. Something like hitting the button twice or holding it down for X seconds.

Got back from Phoenix. Interstate says 14.8 and around town says 14.3.
I liken this Overhead MPG Display to a Rubik's Cube for drivers. Maybe this thing goes through a prolonged learning mode for awhile? The fill ups say I'm getting better mileage.
