Overhead fuel mileage display

2006 truck

I'm getting between 2.5 and 3.5 mpg less than the display says. Is this typical?

I'm averaging 15 to 16 mpg at 65 to 75 mph. What would be the best way to increase my mileage. Truck is bone stock except for the intake filter.

My display compared to hand calculations is right on. I don't think there's any way to tweak them. Mybe with adjusting tire size with a Smarty, but that'll be an expensive hit or miss.

best thing to increase economy is maitnenance and driving habits.

You might add more info. Rear gear ratio, tire size, amount of highway versus city driving, 4X4, etc.

I've been running all highway miles. Usually 730-800 miles in two days. Rearend is 3.73, tires are stock and it's a 4x4. I do this trip almost every weekend and I've been keeping track for a little over two months now. I run all synthetic fluids, change the fuel filter often and typically turn 1850 rpm @ 65mph. I know the odometer is correct. My trip is exactly 365 miles I've been doing it for 15 years. I purchased this truck with 85K miles four months ago and have put a new transmission in it.

My driving is pretty much a mix of highway & City driving. My combined driving is 15-17 mpg and can crowd 20 mpg, all hand calculation. The overhead for me is 1-2 mpg off. Since you have a dually it does seem a tad low mpg. You may want to look at the pump next time you fill up, the station I use to go (Mobil) put a sticker explaining that the diesel mix will have 5-20% bio-diesel . I did notice it right away on the mpg and the truck smoked more when I got on the throttle hard. It was a black & blue sticker here, they may have switch on you too.

Pretty typical , from what I`ve read ....mine`s pretty close , but it`s still at least 1.5-2 mpg high.

Mine is up to 6mpg off. Depends on what setting I use for RP on the Smarty. But for the most part it is between 4-6 mpg off. I normally read 22-25mpg on the OH and HC is 16-18.

I find that the longer you let your overhead go without resttiing, the more accurate it is. it calculates from the last reset, not the last fillup or the day it was built.

I'm like glocklove & reset ALL overhead setting @ each fillup
Mine is usually within 0.3-0.5 mpg of hand calc
Running bone stock I get 18-19 mpg dpending on hiway/town mix
Hiway is usually around 21-22 empty, towing has run ~11.5 overall after 2K miles from OH-AZ (regardless of what's being towed)

I also started doing this and have noticed that the OH is closer to my HC numbers.

The OH fuel mileage display shows the average fuel mileage from either the last time it was reset or the last 600 miles.

What happens when you go past the 600 mile mark?

It's a rolling average of the last 600 miles or since the last reset. Every mile past 600 gets dropped and the last mile you drive gets added.
