Can anyone tell me the appropriate fuse sizes for each circuit? Should I just put a 15a on each or smaller? Is 15a too small / big for circuits like the electric brakes? I understand how to physically construct the box but I'm lost on the fuse sizes.

Looking at my '03 schematics if you're just using fuses for lighting go with 20A for parking, and 15A each for the turnsignals.
I believe the electric brakes is on a different feed through the brake controller.

The TIPM has a 15a threshold so I can't go any higher than that, at least on the lights. So are the brakes no run through the TIPM, only circuits related to lighting?

I called Big Tex to see what info they could offer but the best I got was the tech going out and looking at a Ford on their lot to see what size it's fuses were (which ranged from 10a to 30a). He was nice but I don't think he understood the wiring issue on the newer Dodges.

Secondly, check out this site ( http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006/08-021-06.htm ) for information reguarding a flash to increase the load rating the TIPM sees before it shut downs and have the dealership of your choice reflash the ECM.

Third, I would invest in a good OBD II with CAN-BUS scanner to read any trouble codes and maybe even change a few parameters or reset the TIPM with out having to go to the dealer.

I had my TIPM flashed for the highest setting that the TSB allowed. On all of my trailers I wired in a box that has a 15 amp relay to control each of the different light circuits, the relay limits what the TIPM sees to 15 amps, while the flash increased it limit to 17.5 amps. I changed out all my incandescent bulbs to led's - they draw less current and are brighter. I cannot remember what amperage the Prodigy Brake Controller was, but I used a relay for that circuit also, it was at the max draw/current of the Prodigy. From the relays I also installed an in line fuse to each, fused them to the 15 amp max of the relay. Did the same with the +12 supply. I also took the time to put in a 'bonded ground' circuit to both sides - trailer and truck. I have had no problems with any wiring, the TIPM has not had any 'trips' on it. I did all of this the next day after I brought my truck home, have done this for years with vehicles that did not have the issues our Doge trucks have, this is just good wiring practices that have been around forever and have been used by trailer companies for a long time. Double protection circuits have kept many a truck from toasting it's wiring harnesses.


Think of it like this, each wire has this in it's line:
truck plug // trailer plug - box cable in ( relay - fuse - trailer wiring) cable out

Very nice set up CD in NM, I like the idea of fuses and relays. I'm not real good with wiring (especially relays), would you be interested in building / selling a box? Got any pictures of yours?

My solution: I took a 7-pin extension cord, cut it in half, soldered a bunch of inline fuse holders in, and filled each slot with a 15A fuse.

Cheap, easy, nothing to mount.

 

Thank you, that answers my question really good. I've been wondering if the non light oriented circuits worked with 15a or needed higher ratings (which would conflict with the 15a / 17.5a TIPM rating).
