Why 5.9 over 6.7

I'm in the market for a dodge diesel. Every diesel guy that I know says to stay away from the 6.7, and get an early 07 with the 5.9. Was the 5.9 a better motor? More reliable? Easier to work on? Better mileage?

Thanks

Less EPA mandated polution BS on a 07 5.9 engine; however, you don't get the new 6 speed auto either.

5.9 = Better fuel economy and less smog equipment.

I can't speak for the newer 6.7's, but the early ones had a lot sooting issues with the turbo. I know they were coming up with flashes to help address it, but I don't know if it was completely solved or not.

Better mileage and no dpf stuff to deal with.

From what I've seen on the 48re vs the 68re, the 48re is easier to build which will put it stronger than the 68. I think that is due to parts availability and a few years ahead on research. The 68 is still relatively new compared to the 48.

I agree with what the other DTR Members have already told you.

I would add that the 5.9 CR Injectors fire three times per event while the 6.7 Injectors fire FIVE times! IMHO,.....more wear and tear on the injectors.

Anything that stands out that I should stay away from?

Thanks Again

Yes, stay away from mine, it's not for sale.

Check for evidence of controller (Clean connectors on top of engine will be a clue)

Check for oil residue on underside of chassis. (Injector/s failed at some time, possible controller evidence)

Check for play in front wheels if possible (Front end issues *Death Wobble*)

Check for rust on underside of body (Salt, Beach truck)

Check the A-Pillar grab handles (They break easily and run about $65 per side) Impco products makes a bushing kit.

Check all vent controls including recirculate (Blend door issues)

That's all I can think of.

How about after the Exhaust gas recycler and particulate filter are deleted from the 6.7? How would the mileage differ on similar trucks?

Thanks

I had this same problem a few years ago and went with an 06 for the same price as an 08. If I had it to do over I would go 08. Everyone I know with one loves their 6.7 and trans and exhaust brake and nicer interior. True the first year or so had egr and regen issues, as well as turbo issues, but as long as its 08 or newer I would buy one. As far as mileage, I don't know how but both my 06 suck and get 14-15 for my combined average. I know with the deletes the 6.7 can get pretty decent mileage and when stock can rival both my 06s. As far as the injectors they are all Bosch and suck IMO. Injectors are a 4 letter word in my house having been through a few sets. Plenty of guys with low miles that don't use pressure are having issues with their 3rd gen injectors.
I would go newer.

Rye is giving you some good advice on the 5.9 vs the 6.7 engines. He is also right about the CR Injectors on ALL of these engines! They are LOUSY! I had to replace mine on my 2006 at 100,000 miles.

Personally, I don't care for the 6.7 engines. If you do the DPF Deletes they run better but in STOCK form they get TERRIBLE mileage! And even with the deletes the mileage is not great but some of the members here will tell you they get 20-22 MPG, but FWIW,.....I am not buying that!

To add to John's post, many states have started biannual smog inspections for our diesels and you'll fail if you're missing the emissions equipment.

I'm in Louisiana. We don't have emissions inspections.

It looks like it will depend on what I can find the best deal on. I've been waiting for years on the 4.5 Diesel that GM was going to produce, then they shelved. Now I've got several thousand GM Mastercard points that I have no plans to use.

I'm headed to Houston this weekend to do some shopping.

Thanks for all the help.
