What's this huge puddle of oil?
What's this huge puddle of oil?
Went out and started the truck the other morning (05 3500 4x4 quad cab long bed CTD dually). Coldest morning of the year so far....28 degrees.....a full 15-20 or so degrees from the next coldest morning of the year...
Start the truck, go inside, come back out 20 minutes later....HUGE puddle of oil under the truck dripping out left side of engine compartment.
Check it out after it cools....looks to be coming out oil filter....but....pull stick...oil is still full???
What's with that. Start it up the next morning....let it idle for 20 minutes...no drips.
Been good for 3 weeks, then another cold day...start it up....drip drip....pull stick after shut down and drain back...still fill of oil.
I'm getting ready to have oil changed and new filter....is it possible that last oil change they over filled me and the cold stap has started forcing it out?
Anyone else ever had a problem like this?
I know I am a little lax...I honestly never check the oil level and pay someone to change the oil (I mean heck..I don't have anything that will hold 12 quarts of drained oil
) so I don't know if it was overfilled, but it seems odd I can loose what looks like 1/4 - 1/3 quart of oil on my driveway not to mention however much must have dripped out in motion and still be full.

Help us help you, fill in the truck info in user control pannel, check all your fluids trans. coolant, go back to the place to start documenting this issue , to much oil or trans. fluid can damage things , eng. when there is that much extra oil it is high enough to get turned into foam by the moving parts and foam will not make oil pressure .
Hey come'on now, don't you know the world revolves around me and you'all should know everything about me because of it
I had put that information in the post, but I added it to my profile
Haven't had any oil pressure problems according to the stock gauge. Just the normal fluctuations in pressure from idle to cruising.
I'll just sto pon the way home from the office and change the oil...its a coupld thousand miles early...but I don't want to have to worry about it.
I can see the conversation now:
"hey Mr you got a huge oil leak everything here is covered in oil"
"yeah I know, I think its coming from the oil filter"
"ohhh no its not......." man I hope it doesn't go like that

Well changed the oil....the official word from the shop was..."down about 1/2 quart when it came in"....and no mention of an oil leak.
So phase I is now complete
Changed the oil and filter....park it in a different place at home for a month and wait. Its going to get cold again by the end of the week....so we'll see if it leaks again.

Yeah... Same here... come to find out it was the high pressure synthetic blinker fluid from the right side. That stuff cost about $30 per qt!!! I had to replace 12 pounds of metric air in both front tires... But they were having a sale on it... Thank goodness!
Go check the filter to see if it is tight... I will bet money that it is loose and oil is seeping around the gasket... I see it all the time.
1 qt on the ground looks like 2 gallons... I know alll about that!

My bypass oil filter does the cold weather leak thing every year. Cold temps shrink & harden the seal? Does thicker oil & resultant higher pressure do it? Don't know for sure, but I have to yank the filter to get it to stop.
I had the same thing happen once. Hand tightened the filter in the fall come winter freezes outside rubber ring shrinks just like anything else when cold. Not much but enough for high pressure fluid to find a way out. Tighten the filter and I bet that will not happen again.
Are you sure it is oil? You did say on the left side. When it is cold my CP3 pump leaks intermitently. It is located on the front left upper part of the engine. When winter arrives the leaking CP3 pump posts start. Mine has already started leaking again this year, but more frequently than before. Unfortunately it has to leak when you take it to the dealer. Even though they can see the diesel fuel has dripped down the wiring and on to the differential cover, they will give you the old cannot duplicate, no action taken reply. My pump was replaced when the truck was eleven months old but since then DC has gotten a lot more stingy with the pump replacing. The puddles of diesel fuel looks great on my new concrete driveway. If I didn't smell it I would also swear it was oil.
