Turbo dying/about to??
Pulled the intake tube off the other day and noticed some engine oil on the intake side of the turbo.... I understand that it's not good and obviously needs to be replaced but am I looking at a short term problem or does anyone know??

Did you just recently re-oil your air filter, and add too much oil maybe? It sounds like it, just wipe it out, check for movement in and out(should have none), or for rubbing marks(up and down movement) in housing from turbo. If it is fine, just put back together and don't worry, you just added a little too much oil onto filter.

I've got a similar situation. Intake side of turbo had oil all over it so I cleaned it up and replaced the K&N with a stock filter to see it was actually filter oil or engine oil. When I looked in the tube immediately after the turbo there was what appeared to be soot. Is it possible for the seals to let exhaust enter the compressor side of the turbo? Or was it just a result of K&N oil entering intake? I'm fearing for the life of my turbo, I think its on it way out.
Also, when I checked for play in the turbo there was none but it doesn't seem to spin as long as I thought it would when I spin it by hand. How long should it continue to spin freely?
What do turbo bearings sound like when they are going bad? I replaced my cracked exhaust manifold today and thought it would cure this erratic whistling sound but it didn't. The whistle doesn't sound like normal turbo whine and won't do it when the engine is cold only after it warms up a bit. (it whistles alot more after replacing thermostat that was stuck open)

Is it possible the oil to bearing drain back to the pan is restricted? Hence there's no where for the oil to go except out the seal? ? ? This happened to a friend of mine's truck.
