Unhappy Turbo Dying???

Well. I just put on part of a 4 inch exhaust im currently building for my truck(its under the cab). I drove it a few days, and then noticed when i shut it down, as i was listening to the turbo spool down; that it would woosh like normal and then kind of sound like a metal rubbing metal noise right before it stopped. Checked turbo, and shaft can be moved in and out probably 1/8th inch. Up, and down play is tight, but it will move in and out which ive heard is pretty bad. It never was like this before, so i guess a bearing or something must have went? So my questions are
1) Can i rebuild this myself, and how hard is it to do?
2) Where can i get the rebuild kit, and what will it cost
3) why did my turbo die such an early death?

Its always had at least 40psi of oil pressure, and i dont bark it much. Most boost it has seen was 40, and EGT's only got to 1500 degrees twice for maybe 1 second. Turbo does great while truck is running, and spins freely by hand, and when i shut the truck down. Seems like all is normal besides the in and out play i never had before. Im still driving it, and it will still pump just as much boost as it ever has, but im trying to drive a little easier till i can rebuild/replace it. Turbo sounds great while truck is running, and whistles like crazy; just makes a wierd noise when i shut it off, and has in/out play. It makes a faint clunk sound as i move it in adn out,a nd it stops each way. What could be the problem? My spring break is next week, so if i could have it rebuilt before i go back to school it would be best if that is what is going to have to be done. Thanks for any help guys. Im still in shock, and i figured my turbo would last a LONG time. Guess what you dont expect is always the first to go. Could be worse i guess.

U runnin a stock HX 35?

How high do you peg out your boost? u have a wastegate? oil seems to be ok, maybe somethin hit the vanes?

now im confused

If u overdo it, you might have burnt it out.. ive seen em like that round these parts.. but there was oil out of the impeller or the little turbine in there too, it was shot..

Way too much play, buy a rebuild kit here for about $70 http://www.htturbo.com/
Not too hard if you follow the directions in the service manual perfectly.

Experts recommend rebalancing the turbo after rebuilding, unless you have thousands of dollars of specialized equipment have a shop do it.

My turbo is a stock WH1C. Not the HX35. Most boost it has ever seen was 40psi, but since i put ther bigger housing on; it hasnt seen as much(35max). I had a wastegate about 3 months ago before the 16cm housing. Oil pressure is usually over 40psi. Nothing hit the vanes i dont think, unless we hit the rear of the turbo blades installing the downpipe, which seems unlikely to me, as they are inside the housing. It doesent seem to be blowing anything out the exhaust or anything, so i dont know what would have caused it?? Thanks for the link Infidel. Is there much chance of it not being ballanced correctly though after a rebuild? Thanks

I would think if you put the impellors back on the shaft exactly where they came off and nothing was rubbing before that you would be ok.

Thanks! I didnt see anything on HTT's site about selling the stuff to rebuild it. Do i have to contact them or what? I may end up ordering the rebuild kit, and since im off school friday, i could yank that baby off, and should be able to have it back on by Friday night hopefully. Thanks again

I don't know much about your turbo but I believe many have a rebuild option for them out there, I know my Garett 14B does at least. Contacting HTT is probably your best bet. Here is a link of how to rebuild the 14B, the principle should be the same.

Call HHT, or go to the site where you downloaded the instructions and see if there is a dealer locator. I would follow the directions for the specific turbo you have, there are some parts that have to go in with a certain side facing a certain way.

Yeah. I will definatley follow the right instructions if i rebuild it. Im not sure how soon it will be. I may run it a while like it is, and see what happens since it isnt rubbing anything, and sounds fine when the trucks running, but I would like to go ahead, and rebuild it soon if i can. I may try to call or email HTT about it. Thanks

Well. HTT says they can get me a rebuild kit for $87.50, and if i want i can send in the shaft, and wheels, and have them balance that for $37. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Still dont know if il have it balanced, but i think i will buy the kit to rebuild it soon. Thanks

If you do decide to send it in for balancing talk to HTT about other mods they can do to the turbo while it's there. There are some machining mods they do that aren't too pricey that will beef up your turbo output.

Nothing but good to say about HTT, they are an A-1 outfit.

Yeah. I would like to have a timer. I would just be afraid it wouldnt work right when i went into school, and the darned theing would run all day. But it would also be nice for running into the gas station for a pop or something. Lock the doors, but the truck stay running till you get back in it. And when i shut it off at the house, it would be fine too. I would like to have one, just have other things to worry about. I dont thinkt hat had anything to do with my turbo dying anyways, as i usually try to let it cool to 300 degrees, but sometimes im in ahurry, and sut it down at 350*. Always under 400. I know all kinds of people that dont cool them down with no problems.

Yeah, its good to let it cool down. I dont think 350 is that bad of a temp. The timer is a very good thing. Think of it like this: If someone does steal your truck with the timer on, chances are they wont know about it, or how to alter it, so the truck will eventually die after the set minutes. By that time, someone will have seen where your truck went....
