truck problems

I bought an 02 about 6 months ago and it seemed ok I guess until about a month ago. We went to Orlando for the day (about a 2 hour drive) and on the way back it started to act up when coming to a stop. When stopping, the motor seems to idle rough. Seems as if it happens quickly and then stops and it doesn't always do it. I would almost think it was a dirty fuel filter or something like that but it can't be because we've changed all the filters oil, air and fuel. This has happened on 3 separate occasions and it did not happen at every stop sign/light just on some.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Patti

Re:truck problems

Mine did that exact thing last summer, 4,000 miles on the odometer.
It also did it after the first start of the day, or after the truck had sat for a while, usually over 6 hours.

Most noticable when coming off the freeway and idling to the bottom of the ramp, almost died on me a couple of times.

Take it to the Dealer and tell them it is "surging" at idle, (magic words), and hopefully it does it when the service writer or technician is in it, otherwise you'll get a "could not duplicate problem".

Dealership first thought it was the lift pump, so they pressure tested it and it was well within specs.
Sent me home.
Week later, as the problem got worse and worse, I took it back and it did its thing when the service writer drove it into the shop.

Long story short, it was my VP44 injection pump, they put it on a test stand and verified.
They had to call the STAR line to get warranty coverage, and after 5 days of waiting for it to ship (they don't keep them in stock) it was fixed.

Has been fine ever since.

Check your data plate inside driver's door, if it was born in February of 2002, in Mexico then you might have gotten one of the same bad VP44's I got.

Good Luck.

phox

Re:truck problems

Thanks Phox,

Yep it only seems to do it after a long trip and at high speeds. won't do it in stop and go traffic.

Inside the door says 04-02 Mexico
Still could be the same problem eh?

Thanks again, I'll be calling the dealer in the morning.

patti

Re:truck problems

Just got my truck back today from the dealership. Apparently there are no problems with the truck!

They ran some tests and some diesel tech hooked it up to a computer and it all comes back clean. Of course they could not duplicate the problem. I was told to keep track of what it does and bring it back if it acts up again. Should I have expected anything else? But my truck was kind enough to act up at the Wendy's drive thru just this evening. Not any where near the diesel mechanic so he could hear it though. Aarrgghh!!

So no answer on what the problem is just yet.
I'll update if/when I get more on this

Patti

Re:truck problems

I was typing this when the server suddenly got moved,
so, I'll try to remember what I typed

That diagnosis is exactly what I got when I first took it in to the Dealer,
Could Not Duplicate Problem :'(

Over the course of a week, it got progressively worse, so I took it back, and lucked out as it did it's surgey thing for the service writer.
Mine never threw any codes, and according to their computer it didn't have anything wrong.

Hopefully your's doesn't get any worse very fast, maybe you'll luck out as well.
Take it back next week, maybe take the service writer with you for a test drive.

You should know better than to try to take one of these trucks into a drivethrough anyway

Re:truck problems

We'll I didn't get around to calling the dealer today figured the truck won't act up for them anyways.

I had left the truck in the driveway for a couple hours this afternoon and then decided to pull it into the garage for the night when wouldn't you know it, it started sputtering when I started it up. This is starting to annoy the heck out of me. I'm thinkking of getting a recording device and keep it ready for the next time she acts up.

Anyways, anyone want to let me know where I can find this A.P.S ? How about if I promise not to touch it, just look at it.

It just bugs me when I spent all this cash on the NEW truck (BTW the 98 is better) and not hardly 6 months later and this stuff starts up.

Thanks
Patti
