Problems Deciding On A Truck

I'm looking for a different truck. I know I want a CTD. They're not very easy to find up here in Minnesota. I'd like to get a 96-98 5 Speed Extended Cab but up here they go more than the Automatics. So here is my problem. Would you settle for a 94-95 Regular Cab 5 Speed or a Extended Cab Automatic? I guess the only reason that i'm considering the 5 speed is because the talk about the pressure levels on the autos. That's not good! I'd like all of your opinions.
Thanks,
Trever

You can find them. Look on the internet. I bought mine in Northern Wisconsin and saved about 2K.

I got the auto because the wife did not want the stick. I did.

Re:Problems Deciding On A Truck

Thanks for replying. How much did you end up paying and how many miles did it have on it?

I've been looking on Autotrader, Cars.com, Carsoup.com, MinnesotaCars.com, and Autobytel.com. They all want more than they're worth or more than I want to spend. I passed on an offer for a 98 2500 Q-Cab 12V for $13.5 with a little over 100k on it. Then I called back and it was sold. That was up by the cities I think.

The only mods to the tranny that you should have to do is upgrade the valve body right?

The torque converter is the first thing you'd want to replace in the auto. The stock converter has too high off a stall speed, about 2200 RPM. Your torque comes on bigtime at about 1800. All that torque transfers into heat in the trans instead of making it too the ground. The stock autos will hold up fairly well if you don't go too crazy on the HP mods and drive them nice. A trans temp gauge is a must if you're going to do any towing. There's quite a few aftermarket converters available and at least as many opinions as which one is best.

As far as price, I paid about $13US for mine last spring with 125K miles and new front end/brakes/exhaust (about $2000). $13.5 for a '98 QC was a really good deal.

Yeah I thought that was a pretty good deal. It's hard to find them up here. Maybe there will be more or they will be cheaper in spring or summer.

Re:Problems Deciding On A Truck

they are starting to go up around here. i almost bought a 98 quadcab 5 sp 12v for 8900 but it was a bit to rough for me. it had 209k but the motor was strong. i just bought a 97 ex cab 4x4 dually for 10k and that was a deal in my part of the country with 201k on it. keep looking, a lot of folks are trading in there old cummins for the 03s. mike

I just paid 16K for my '98 with 49k miles on it. It has two good dings in body, but that's it. Fully loaded Laramie SLT. Power everything.

Darrin

What's the limit on the mileage if you want a truck that is reliable and could be used as a daily driver or a puller?

If anyone knows any other ways of locating these truck or other auto search engines let me know.

Thanks,
Trever

I really think the Cummins is a great engine. If I saw a truck with 300k on it I would not be afraid to buy it and drive it. 12V only. I don't really trust the 24V they have too many eletrical things to go wrong.

If you guys think trucks sell $$ in you part of the woods come to Ohio. A 98 long bed quad cab 5spd diesel. power everything 4x4 with 80k on it would sell for 22k and trust me that is a good price. I have seen one with 60k on it go for 25k
DM01

Re:Problems Deciding On A Truck

dodgeman01,
Thanks. Well, it's my parents that don't think getting a vehicle, with more miles than my current vehicle, is a good idea. They don't think that they will last that long. I'm in college now so they will be handling the payments and co-signing for it. I don't mind the idea but everyone else is telling me not to get one. And another thing, we shouldn't have to avoid the getting the auto trannys. That is kind of sad that Dodge couldn't figure out their tranny's.

John_P,
Thanks. That's where I have been looking. Autotrader, Cars.com, Carsoup.com, MinnesotaCars.com, Autobytel.com, Dieselram.com, TurboDieselRegister.com, and DieselTruckResource.com. Autotrader has been helping the most. Those classified ad businesses sure must make a lot of money. Autotrader wanted $35 for the standard ad without a photo and like $50 for a photo, and $70 for multiple photos.

Re:Problems Deciding On A Truck

If you don't need an extended cab then the 95 2500 regular cab looks good with the 5 sp. This would be a great solid truck. You will love the wheel to wheel running boards.

If no, then the 97 2500 black sport extended cab with the automatic. Just get mainenance records for the Auto and front end.

No problems with my 97 with 100K and I paid 16K for mine but private party with records. See sig for details.
