Oil pan gasket
I bought the Dodge repair manual on my 2001 2500 4x4 HO Diesel. It says remove the transfer case and transmission to replace the oil pan gasket. I looked and it appears that I can get the oil pan down enough to replace the gasket without removing these things. Is this just an optical issusion. Has anybody else done this?

actually the pan can come out,,,,loosen eng mts, lift up eng till it tuches in back,,jack up cab (not at axle) this will give you ample room for this proj.evn on a 4 w.d.---B.T.D.T.

Yes, you might be able to lift motor high enough to have some room, but it's a &itch...
I just replaced the whole oil pan on mine, and it wasn't funny.
There is the oil pickup tube that goes from front of engine, all the way to the back and drops into the deep side of the pan, you will have to reach inside and get "creative" to clear tube.
Also there are 2 bolts then will be almost impossible to remove without lifting motor, they are right underneath the front crossmember.
Finally beware of cooling fan when you tilt/lift motor, mine got jammed againsta radiator (I didn't notice it) and eneded up with 2 holes....

I had to replace the pan on my 99 because I hit a rock with the front end housing on a rough trail while hunting, the front end folded up and the pinion put a big hole in the pan and I loosened the motor mounts and transmission mounts and jacked up the motor with one jack and the transmission with the other jack and that made the job easier

Ihave done this a several times, you do that with changing an engine. Take the bolt loose at the motor mounts, unbolt the fan shroud, jack the engine up like was said till it hits the insulation. The pan will slide out with the pickup in place.
Even if you pull the trans and make sure you realize, the flywheel and adaptor plate, you still have to raise the engine or work with a half inch space to take the bolts out of the pickup tube and pull it with the pan.
Without pulling the pan out, I doubt that you will get the flanges real clean. And the gasket parts will drop into the pan, not good.

Interesting link... I had not seen it, wish I had. I have been using sealent in the corners but not near as extensive as they show in the TSB. I an say this, if mine was sealed like that, I would ot have the leak that I have. Oh well, live and learn.
