What did Cummins charge you for the pump? A month ago I paid $109.00 plus tax for the one I bought. I thought about the piston pump upgrade but I have NO plans of upgrading anything on the engine so I figure stock pump will work just fine.
I finally finished with my rusty roof repair. In the process I found more rust when we removed the rear window, which I broke, so now it has just a plain glass instead of a slider. I never opened it anyway, oh well.
I decided instead of doing a bunch of body work that I would roll the roof with bedliner so, it may not be perfect but it aint rusted.
This is one job I never want to do again so if I buy another 1st gen it will have to be rust free!
With the kit from Nascar Mark or others you can change the fuel pump in just slightly more time being the time required to install the new hard line from the pump to the filter and the time to cut out the insulation on the tappet cover. Call it 30 minutes. Well worth the extra $$ IMHO.
My truck started the slow starting Monday when the tank was on the 1/2 mark so I went and filled it up. In the station there was a car and a truck that had just finished fueling up. The truck moved but the car didn't so I tooted my horn. The car still didn't move so I had to pull around it and back into the pump in front of it. Inside the car were 2 teenage girls texting (each other?) so they just HAD to cause inconvenience until they finished. What the hell is wrong with the new generation of kids who believe they're entitled to inconvenience other people because their own lives come first?
The other pet peeve is people who fill up their car and leave it at the pump while they go in and get snacks etc... They've already paid at the pump so no reason to block access just because they're lazy.

Pump # 4983584 $108.44
gasket # 3939258 $4.47
With tax came to $116.65
I agree. I'm not doing any further mods, and it runs great. Reliability is what I'm keeping hold of.
I might upgrade the pump, but at another, less hectic time.
T-man your fuel PSI might have been dropping after driving your truck for a while, because it was starting to suck more air as the tank got less full....
That's entirely possible.
Once I have it back together, I'll take it for a spin to see what numbers I'm at, without touching the fuel tank. I'll post back what I see.

Where'd you get that idea ?
Lol.
Nice job. One Florida / rust free roof.
The new roof looked like brand new. Where'd ya get the parts for it ?

In simple terms... Parents and society.
You could have backed up to an inch off their bumper, and took a nap... I see stupid behavior all the time, so that doesn't surprise me. Occasionally, I do it myself
Since Mark368 will remind us that we're not to talk about stuff other than "what we did to our love affairs", .. er.... our 1st gen's.
Did the truck act any differently after you filled it up ? Do you have a FP Gauge ? What was it reading with the new pump?
My son found a guy on facebook parting out a 93 W250 club cab that was only a few miles from me. The bottom of the cab was rusted away but the roof was near perfect. He cut it off at the pillars and sold it to me for $150. I wanted to buy the axles too but they were going to his dad.

Nice. Should have took photos of what was left, bought what we wanted here, and made a few bucks shipping it up to us.

With the tank between 1/2 and full it starts instantly on the first cylinder to go over it's compression stroke. When it gets down to 1/2 or less it will either crank for a long time or refuse to start at all. It does like it did when the previous pump went out. (Hmmm could the new piston pump have crapped out?) It seems like the VE is able to pull fuel as long as the level in the tank is above 1/2 full. Once it's started it runs fine to a point then it's starved for fuel with the bad pump. I haven't checked the fuel pressure lately.

seems like it is time to pull the unit out of the tank and check the suction tube for holes or cracks at the 1/2 full level. I`ve seen a few vehicles with this problem.

I agree. We're having the house tented this weekend but as soon as I get back I'm going to pressurize the tank to 15 PSI then check for leaks. If I find none and the fuel pump still has good pressure then it's time to run the fuel down low and drop the tank. If I had measurements I'd consider cutting an access hole in the bed but that's probably more work than the job is worth. I hate working under the truck with my gimpy back.

I would NOT pressurize the tank with 15 PSI unless you want to risk splitting it wide open and leaking fuel everywhere.
As I have said before the tank will likely bleed off some pressure as it is vented at the top of the sending unit and only has a slip fit rubber gasket around the filler neck.
